• Warning!!

Riding a tuned or deristricted EMTB is not a trivial offence and can have serious legal consequences. Also, many manufacturers can detect the use of a tuning device or deristricting method and may decline a repair under warranty if it was modified from the intended original specification. Deristricting EMTB's can also add increased loads for motors and batteries. Riding above the local law limit may reclassify the bike as a low-powered bike, requiring insurance, registration and a number plate.

Be aware of your local country laws. Many laws prohibit use of modified EMTB's. It is your responsibility to check local laws. Ignoring it, has potential implications to trail access, and risk of prosecution in the event of an accident.

A polite request BEFORE this thread gets filled with everyone's viewpoints, it's a POLL. It's in the derestricting section.

If you wish to express your opinions on the subject, please continue to do so in the many threads already full of derestriction opinions, or even make a fresh one if you like.

Many thanks.

Thanks, yes the intention of this was just to get numbers NOT to begin a discussion of the rights or wrongs of derestricting.

For interest, the figures for the southern England pedalhounds enduro series thats just wrapped up are as follows.
Emtb open 59 entries
Emtb restricted 135 entries

44% derestricted.
Of course they may have been some derestricted cheater's in the restricted class.

It's actually 30%
59 divided by the total of 59+135
Sorry for the correction, but I'm anal with numbers. :giggle:

Current bike no. But my all my previous ones were. Reason the current one isn't is because of the bosch smart system, none of the tuning boxes can show the correct speed annoyingly

I voted yes as my previous bike was set to USA spec, never messed with any other tuning options as I never felt the need, the current Orbea Rise has been left as it came as I don't want to risk the amount of money it cost should I have a problem whilst in warranty, as soon as it 's out of warranty then it will go to USA speed but nothing more than that.

I would love to these option added to the poll...

1. Yes, my bike's limit is 25km/h

2. Yes, my bike's limit is 32km/h

3. No, my bike's limit is 25km/h

4. No, my bike's limit is 32km/h
My bike is originally limited to 25 kmh since it’s Europe, but I increased it to 32 kmh with a software update.
Technically, it’s just not the European firmware, and 32 km/h is perfectly fine, at 32 the battery drain is increased so I wouldnt want more.
So maybe we need one more option for those who have derestricted it via software :)

Or...for those of us in the civilised world...

X. No, my bike was limited to 45km/h from the shop by a Shimano technician, and that's where it remains to this day.

You are missing the fact that Shimano ep801 has 45kmh option with Emax Tuning software

I have had 8 or so ebikes over the last 10yrs, some with hub motors used primarily on roads, and some with DIY mid motors and none have been restricted. Oh and all have had throttles, very useful for starting off and as a walk assist and then left alone. I just use common sense from over 50yrs of cycling experience to guide my riding. Never had an issue.
