Pic of the Day

This time of year I just keep my sliding glass doors wide open. Well, it seems a wasp has decided he likes the place and has been coming and going all week. I’ve decided he’s become my pet and have named him Waspy. Thing is gigantic and quite intimidating but hasn’t really bothered me. Hope he goes on his way soon or he will eventually have a shortened life span. 😒

I would rename him Smashy the next time he visited. I’ve had too many encounters with his cousins all of which were named Stingy.

Today’s ride was at the Lake Pleasant regional park. Yes, we have water in the desert although, it’s mostly contained in reservoirs.

It was nice not to be the only ass on the trail for a change. They’re the descendants of the burrows used in mining back in the late 1800’s and early 1900’s.

How big is it?
I admire your restraint, I would have been unable to stay in the same room without hunting it down and either scaring it back out of the window or crushing it to death.

When on holiday in France in May one year in the early 80's, I had an encounter with a Giant Woodwasp, their colouring gets them mistaken for a European Hornet, but they are much bigger. Ordinary ones are pretty big, but I reckon that this one may have been a queen looking for a new home. It was huge! It was about 3" long with a fat body that was at least as thick as my little finger.

Facts added years after the event: At the time I thought it was an enormous hornet and would sting. In fact it was probably a Giant Woodwasp which have no stinger, but look very much like an enormous hornet. If the woodwasp was a queen then it would have had an ovipositor sticking out the rear which looks like a stinger, adding to my initial assumption that it was an enormous hornet

When I first saw it it was about 18" away from my head. It buzzed when I got close and alerted me to its presence. It scared the shit out of me and I accelerated in the direction I was already heading. Unfortunately I was now inside the holiday caravan, with the hornet/woodwasp between me and the door. With some distance between us I calmed down and I remember thinking" no-one will believe how big it is, I need to kill it." So, armed with a badminton racket and a tea towel, I crept towards it. Sadly it saw me coming, and with an angry buzz it flew out of the open door!

When I told people how big it was, I was correct, nobody believed me! :(

First ride since july 2025! Shoulder surgery forced me off the bike until rehabilitated.

Taken a week up in SW Scotland and expecting wet and windy all week. But today's forecast looked pretty decent so yesterday I booked an e-bike from The Brake Pad at Kirroughtree Trail Centre near Newton Stewart in Galloway.

Nothing drastic, just 3 laps of the blue to see how the shoulder would hold up, and it did! 🕺

17.5 miles later, 1800ft climbed and 1100KCals burned, I returned the bike.

Oh it was good to be out in the peace and quiet of the forest again.

Has to be a solid 1.5"/4cm. It's hot here so my place is closed up with AC running. He's going to be begging to leave soon.

I zapped one of those with a zap racket once...

Busy at Hawes today. Canyon had a demo event, and clinic by their sponsored pro Braydon Bringhurst. Brought a lot of people out.
The film “8600 ft”, which chronicles Brayden Bringhurst’s climb up The Whole Enchilade route near Moab, is a must watch. TWE is challenging enough to ride down, and no one ever climbed it. The documentary is an incredible demonstration of one man’s strength, skill, and determination. It’s easy to understand the turnout at Hawes.
