You need to put more water in your Akvavit I'm thinkingOn my commute home from work yesterday, I had two encounters with wildlife;
First, I hit a slow worm. Luckily, it seemd to be able to escape, but I recon it woke up with an aching back today.
Then, only a few meters further down the trail, a beaver had cut down a small birch across the trail. The beaver had left the scene.

Lovely can't remember the last time I cycled in the Gloaming as we call it.Out with the boys last night at the top of a steep, try not to drag the brakes downhill.

You met someoine on the trail and sold your bike? How did you get home?
Out with Wayne this morning up at Kielder for a play time "sessioning " certain sections two or three times ..including the new DH section..which is still closed until 6th May but which permissions have been granted to a few Kielder regulars for feedback (I rode it last Saturday.. Tyjay rode it on Sunday ) .
I'm no real Downhiller ..and the trail has two sections / entrances the double black section I'm not afraid to say is way beyond my skill-set ....the pics below dont do the jumps / drops any justice in terms of size ..the( single ) black section has some tasty jumps on it but each one can be by-passed by using the alternative berms ..which are big and flow nicely..
This section is the mid section of what will be the longest downhill in England ..but the upper & lower sections have not yet been started ..
The rest of the Deadwater / Lone Star & Skydive trails were oh so dry & fast running ..a brilliant day and great to be out on the bike with me good bud ..
Neither of us recorded the route ..but came back with a range of 4 miles of battery power left ..and my legs are telling me we've done a lot..

These are a few pics of the double black graded section ...the first one leading into what must be a 10' drop on the second pic ( with no perception of height ) ..but it ain't rollable..and you'd have to be committed..

Blimey, if they're the before and after pics, you were busyI went to Sherwood Pines with the intention of riding though the off-piste stuff and getting to the area known as "the desert", owned by the National Coal Board (NCB). This used to be a huge slag heap, made from black colliery waste from the numerous coal mines that used to be in the area. Then, within my time there, since 2008, it was flattened and about one foot of sand spread over it and then left to nature to take its course. Of course, the four-wheel drive brigade loved it and romped all over it carving through the top layer of sand exposing the black waste. It is of less interest to mtb/emtb, it is what lays beyond that is of interest. Well OK, the steep drops down from the desert to the natural terrain surrounding it can be a lot of fun!
On my way there the trail was blocked with a tree. 15 mins with my folding saw and a bit of grunting sorted that out. I could have lifted the bike over it, but it would be forever there unless I did something.

I climbed a bit higher onto a high ridge that divides the Pines area from the area owned by the NCB. and it was blocked with Gorse growing in from both sides. In case you have not met Gorse, it is extremely spiny, even the branches are spiny. The spines are like needles and they break off into your skin. But the flowers are a beautiful luminous yellow and have a strong, almost pleasant, odour.

The Gorse was too low and bushy for me to do anything except crawl underneath it, so out came the folding saw and I cleared a path, about 50 yards of it! I chucked all the rubbish back into the Gorse.

Apart from the unplanned trail clearance, the day was going well. Until I broke through into the desert.

You can see how the sand has been colonised from the sides as scrub plants establish themselves, Gorse for example and the waxy, almost spiny, grass that seems to be able to grow anywhere. But I could have done without the old gas bottle, the mattress, old tyre and sundry other crap. No bike , not even a motor bike would have dragged a mattress up there, that had to have come on a 4WD.
There's more!

Those black containers on the blackened mattress are oil containers. My assumption is that they tried to set fire to the mattress The other crap is old blankets and sundry car spares, the plastic stuff that breaks easily. Why do they do this? Why not spend less effort and take it to the tip! And that tyre had loads of tread left on it. But it was probably there to add extra smoke to the mattress fire!
