How can I retrofit a “standard” Shimano motor into my 2021 Orbea Rise m10?
The short answer is: you almost certainly can't, and it's not worth attempting. The 2021 Orbea Rise M10 came fitted with the Shimano EP8 (DU-EP800) - Shimano's trail motor of that era, 85Nm. The current "standard" Shimano trail motor is the EP801 (DU-EP801), which is dimensionally and electrically different from the EP8.

The problem is threefold: • Different bolt pattern. The EP801 doesn't share the same mounting interface as the EP8. The Rise frame's motor cavity was designed around the EP8, so the EP801 physically won't drop in.

• Different wiring harness. Shimano changed the connector architecture between EP8 and EP801. The Rise's internal cable routing is wired for the older system - you'd be looking at significant rework inside the frame, not just swapping a plug.

• Frame design. Orbea engineered the Rise around that specific motor unit. It's not a universal cradle - the tolerances are tight.

So in practice: you can't swap in an EP801, and even if somehow the connectors could be adapted, Orbea don't offer an official upgrade path for the original Rise frame.

What you can do: If your EP8 is working fine, there's genuinely not much to gain - the EP8 is still 85Nm and a very capable motor. If it's failed or worn, Shimano and authorised service centres can supply a replacement EP8 unit directly (it's a serviceable and still-available part as of 2026).

Worth asking an Orbea dealer if there's any official word on motor replacements for original Rise frames - but I wouldn't hold my breath for an EP801 retrofit being on that list.

Sorry Greg, I should have been more specific. My ep8 has failed. I am wondering if I can somehow replace it with one of a similar vintage, but not originally for the Rise?

Good news - this is actually a more solvable problem than the original question. Since your EP8 (DU-EP800) has failed rather than you wanting an upgrade, you're looking for a like-for-like replacement, and that's a much cleaner path.

The direct answer: another DU-EP800 unit is what you want, and they do still exist in the market - either as new old stock from Shimano dealers, or as pulled units from crashed/written-off bikes. The DU-EP800 was fitted across a fairly wide range of bikes in the 2020 - 2022 era, so there's a reasonable second-hand supply if you look around.

What will and won't work:Another DU-EP800 (EP8) - direct swap, same mounting interface, same wiring. This is your target.

DU-EP801 - as covered before, different bolt pattern and connector architecture. Not a drop-in. • E8000 (DU-E8000) - older generation, different mounting again. Not compatible.

Where to look: • Ask your Orbea dealer - they may be able to order a replacement DU-EP800 through Shimano's service parts channel, though I'd caveat that availability can vary and I can't guarantee current stock levels

• eBay and second-hand parts forums - crashed bike salvage is a legitimate source for these • Specialist eMTB repair workshops - they sometimes hold pulled units

One thing worth knowing: Shimano treat the motor as a serviceable unit, so if there's any chance yours is repairable (torque sensor failure, for instance, rather than a catastrophic mechanical failure), a Shimano-authorised service centre might be able to fix it rather than replace it. Worth a diagnostic before committing to a full unit purchase.
