I just watched the recent vid/review from @Rob Rides EMTB about the latest updates for the DJI motor. There’s some impressive stuff in there.

For me the price, +\- $10K, is expected. I’m not concerned about the power. 85nm is enough.

It’s the weight and reliability first. The gadgets, power adjustments, and even the colour options are nice. I don’t have range anxiety, yet. 625wh and 360wh is enough for me. Gravity does half the work.…thank gawd🙏😉

So I might be a unique user only because of the area I ride. The other brands have some catching up to do though.

It's brand marketing - trying to establish itself as a top tier brand with top tier pricing.
Yes definitely although I think that the biggest factor is that the demand is so high for what is clearly a game changing package. I am certain that there are many more buyers out there than bikes so I understand that they do not want to leave money on the table.

The package consisting of widely available components the motor comes in is not "game changing". Only the Avinox motor could currently be considered to be "game changing" and even then within a few months will be one of several similarly powerful motors. That's what free market competition does.

Power is one thing - but the feature set/tech is leagues above everything else. And the slim form factor for areas where emtbs might not be legal.. I don't see bosch/shimano bikes trying to compete in form factor yet.

For techies (like me) I don't see any comparison. I can put in a SIM card and track my bike, control an action cam from the bike display, superfast charging, etc..totally not features I need but will make me want the amflow over the equivalent bosch even if they match the power.

With that said I plan to get the amflow to replace one EP8 bike, but the other I can't replace until there's a battery extender option and that would lead me to go bosch gen 5..

Not disagreeing with your other points, but I don’t think the future of EMTB’ing is making them look like ‘normal’ bikes is the way to go! 🤔 Lobbying and educating the ‘trail police’ is what’s needed there I think. If it looks slim but still rips at 30mph up hill, the illusion won’t last! 😂

Making them look more svelte or ‘attractive’ I have no problem with though. 👍

might not be legal.
Thats where we are lucky in northern Ca. 100s of miles of trails, and no karens or enforcement, unless you ask for it.

As far as top speed its identical to the ep801 in class 3 mode obviously. You will just get there a lot quicker. On level ground its easy to do 25 and peddle a little and your at 27 without raising pulse, on the ep801 about 22-23 was where I could cruise if i was hustling but not killing myself.

Really can use a 36 chainring.

I'm in Truckee right now with an EP8 909Wh Norco :( 99%+ of my riding is on ebike legal trails, but there's still lots of areas where I worry a little. TRT is certainly one of those where it's not allowed thanks to it being Federal forest land.

And try not to lap me too many times on my poor Shimano

Your EP8 hasn’t become a rubbish bike just because something better has come along? 👍

What’s the deal with Federal Forest land, are they just against any kind of motorised transport or is it to do with walkers first/trail conflicts etc?

my poor Shimano
Im keeping the ep801 for daily use, and the amflow for kom runs ;)

Lot of my buddies ride Truckee, I used to live there, and worked there for 20 years.

In Pilot hill now 20 min from Auburn which was my home for 51 years. Either way im 2 miles from multiple trailheads and can ride from the house to the trails. I can ride from Pilot hill to El Dorada hills in one ride.

Only a few trails that are no bikes, 99% are bike friendly. Right now you can ride 30 miles and may not see another bike

Right.! Last year they were about as fast as anything else out there. Until the recent power wars started.

They have a ton of reliability issues however, and they do not last long. 3600 miles out of my second motor, and 1800 out of the first one.

And 3 motor to battery cables, and one battery in 14 months. Plus it shuts off mid ride quite often.

Sitting in a bike shop right now.

I ordered a large pro yesterday morning direct from amflow and just got a 72lb fedex tracking #! They showed estimated ship date was 1 month out when I placed the order. YESSSSSSS

To be honest, it is pretty disappointed that all the existed motor manufactures provide almost no competition to DJI. That's why they can sell the bike at such high price in the US at $7500. Keep in mind, they are selling it in China for 36888 CNY(around 5120 USD) even till now. Just think about the the margin they have.

The DJI motor has been out for a whole year now and it is still leading in all categories.
  1. Power - Only Bosch match it just now.
  2. Form factor/weight(at full power ebike level) - No competition
  3. integration - No competition
I think if Bosch focus on form factor/weight and is able to keep their power output, they will be a lot more attractive than higher power but with that huge downtube and weight. People tend to underestimate how much "look" matters to majority of the buyers. But I guess it is much harder than just pump up the power.

I saw many comments are saying other motor brands will catch up soon but I don't see it happening. Just look at the drone and EV market, when it comes to motor and battery, China just dominate it.

Where have you got the figures from around looks appealing to the majority of buyers? How do Haibike sell anything at all then?! 😉😂

There are plenty of good looking bikes out there with larger downtubes, it depends on the rest of the bike whether it’s cohesive or not. We all know at least one though where the downtube seems disproportionate…

There were excellent drone companies before DJI came along, and there still are, especially in the commercial and enterprise space. Consumer level drones though, yes, they’re pretty dominant although I have a Potensic that performs just as well as the DJI Mini, same form factor but an order of magnitude cheaper.

Likewise, many of the established car manufacturers are producing efficient and good looking EVs, with decent quality battery packs. Price is a different issue, but I’m happy to support UK/EU jobs over Chinese ones.

I think the futures bright for now, I’m not having a dig at DJI, they’ve disrupted the market but I’m confident that same market will respond. It has to, otherwise they’ll get out of it altogether and that’s not good for anybody.

I have said this in a few other posts, DJI is focusing the companies resources on these motor systems at the moment. With the US deadline on Drone sales looming in Oct DJI has already taken the step to pivot away. Trump has signed 2 Ex-orders to prioritize US drones and its not looking good for DJI. So I believe they have made the decision to focus on this motor system as after Oct they might take a massive hit. Amflow was a concept bike for the motor system, it was never intended to enter the market place as a new brand, but with their #1 product looking at a ban in the US it looks like they maybe going all in.

Is this why the motor and controller has lost all the DJI branding?

It just says Avinox now, but surely the US administration isn’t that daft, they’ll know the country of origin etc?

No idea but DJI has made some very interesting moves based on this looming ban. Their drones were absent at the big electronic shows in the US. So for people that aren't familiar with DJI they don't have an extensive line of products. They sell drones, small cams, and gimbal sticks which all have wireless tech. The ban would prohibit them from selling drones and wireless products... so basically most of what they build and sell.

Their timing to start blasting out these bike sales in the US seems to match.

The process of whether to buy the Amflow became an easy decision when I saw a $1000.00 price increase for the US this week.

Sorry price increase compared to what? Had they advertised US prices previously?

I came close to ordering one from Ronhack, if they were authorized dealer or US warranty was approved at the time I would have pull the trigger at 6500.00 Which is what the bike is meant to be, value and performance. With the introduction to the US the prices have jumped. The prices are 6500 in central Europe as well currently.

Doesn’t surprise me if it’s cheaper through an unauthorized retailer. 6500 in what currency in Europe tho?
