As has been covered in other threads, battery degradation with resultant reduced range can be a problem. The battery in my Rail is almost four years old and has been recharged twice a week on average over that period. In this past month I have run out of battery twice on rides I do regularly so I am thinking "new battery". My question is "does the new battery have to be programmed or is it simply plug & play?"
Anyone know the answer?

Not sure about smart system but the non smart just swap over.
I've made some adapters for my bike and regularly use my old 500w external frame batteries on my 625 Bosch gen 4 bike.
On long rides my frame carries two 500s and I just swap over when needed without any issues.

My LBS can do a battery test on Bosch batteries, might not be a battery problem.

If non-Smart then just swap them over (as we do), don't know about Smart batteries.

When I purchased a spare smart system battery (as well a spare end plate), all I needed to do was mount it on the bike and allow the system to update the firmware, and it worked fine.

Doesn't the app give a health report or percentage degradation?
I don't own bosch, but would expect this to a normal feature?

Thanks Guys, it's a 625wh pre Smart system so it looks like a straight swap.
Once I'd worked out what the terms horizontal/vertical battery actually meant I managed to find one (with Merlin) for just £425 all in.
Should find out now if it was the battery or me that had withered.

Bought a couple of Bosch Powertube 625Wh Vertical batteries from Merlin October last year, were also £425 but had a voucher so got them for £405 each. As backup in case our January 2022 Rail 500Wh batteries have problems (mine 4,000 miles, wifes 1,500 miles, but both have many charge cycles).

Are you saying that a 625wh battery will fit in a 500wh frame?

Thanks Irie, I have a mate who labours round on our Saturday rides on his Rail 5 with a 500 wh battery. He might be interested in a bit more power for £425.

For any lurkers, interested in this for smart system batteries... I fly my Cube to NZ from Aus w/o battery and hire a 750wh (with suitable end plate) from Wellington. The battery is 'plug & play', no firmware updates or anything required - just ride.
