Has my new hope pro 5 hub been shipped with hope pro 4 freehub?

Just got a rear wheel with hope pro 5 ebike hub but the free hub only has 4 pawls not 6 as I understand the 5 would have? Is it even possible to put a 4 freehub on a 5?

Hey this is interesting - I looked thru the Hope exploded views for the Pro 5 including the ebike specific XD and they all have six pawls.

Something tells me this is a silent running change the details of which haven’t been published yet. You should contact Hope directly to find out for sure.

But I’m guessing the 4-pawl version is a new, updated, ebike specific design. The 6-pawl works by alternating groups of three pawls, so only 3 pawls are engaged at one time. With the 4-pawls, all four are engaged at all times which is better for dealing with ebike forces.

I’m thinking this is the case because when Pro 5 first came out they had some warranty issues with pawls shearing and slipping under normal circumstances. So e-bikes probably just murdered them.

But again, better contact Hope. One thing for sure, that is not a Pro 4 driver.

Hopefully but from my understanding the pro 5 ebike freehub all 6 engage at the same time rather than 3 but be interesting to find out if it is an updated version.

“Thank you for your enquiry. We have made a running change to the Ebike freehubs, increasing the outer diameter and moving to 4 pawls instead of 6. This should bring more resistance to flex and a more secure pawls engagement. All our stainless steel Ebike freehubs are now the 4 pawls design.
Kind regards
Johnny”

Thanks for sharing that @PITBULL and you are right about the original ebike specific 6-pawl design, they’re supposed to all engage simultaneously unlike the non ebike one which alternates groups of three.

I wouldn’t be fussed about the number of pawls. Just because it’s four instead of six doesn’t mean it’s inferior. In fact Hope clearly decided that’s the better move for ebike.

Been a Hope fan for a long time, all their stuff is top notch.

@HappyCamperIan you need to see what your new ones are?
I wonder if they are back to being loud like the Pro 4's?
Mine is one of the ebike specific 4 pawl versions, all the steel freehubs are 4 pawl, and engage simultaneously as described in Pitbulls post...I stuck a little vid in our WhatsApp chat, it does sound quite loud, but I guess I won't really know until it's built up ;)

Didn't see that. Mines the 6 pawl, as last night it was quiet (ish)

I just built up a set of Pro 5 wheels. Needed Super Boost, and Hope does not make an ebike version in the Pro 5. I ended up buying a steel XD driver in which was 6 pawls. Interesting on the switch.

I got the ebike 6 pawl version and the sound is pretty disappointing the pro 4 is louder
