1) I used my iphone for a while. Don't. Aside from the battery issues, waterproofing, there are 2 major problems: you use your single communication device as single navigation device. There is no redundancy. And most of all: the screen is hard to read in bright sunshine.

2) I used the mio and the garmin. The mio is crap. The garmin is great. Easy choice.

3) Garmin comes preloaded with fairly decent maps, but that's not even needed, as you can easily upload opencyclemaps

I had the 800-series, but I found the screen a tiny bit too small for actual navigating. I now have the 1000-series and that's fine. You do need to preplan a route (I use GPsies) by downloading a gpx file. When my planned route needs to change (road closed for example), that's when the iphone comes out of the bag.
