The tricky bit — W292 isn't a code I can pin down for the FitNord Ranger 800FS with any confidence, and I'd rather tell you that than invent a meaning. FitNord bikes typically run a Bafang mid-drive, and the exact fault table varies by motor generation, so the safe move is to check the specific cause rather than guess it.

But combined with "rear wheel doesn't move" when you pedal forward, this now points away from the sensor/motor and towards the freehub itself. If forward pedalling drives the chain and cassette but the hub shell still isn't turning, the pawls or ratchet mechanism inside the freehub aren't catching - a straightforward mechanical failure, not a Shimano STEPS fault at all.

The decisive check: lift the rear wheel off the ground and turn the pedals forward slowly. Watch the wheel itself, not the cassette.

A snapped or worn-out freehub is honestly one of the more DIY-friendly jobs on a bike, mechanically it's just: wheel out, cassette off, freehub body swaps out, cassette back on. No motor internals, no torque-critical carbon, nothing scary. If you've done a cassette change before, you've got 80% of the skills already.

Two things that push it toward "get a shop to do it" on your specific bike though:

Warranty. How old is the Ranger 800FS? If it's still inside its warranty period, get it done through your FitNord dealer regardless of how easy the job looks - opening the hub yourself can complicate a warranty claim on what's likely a component failure, not wear and tear.

Parts sourcing. Budget direct-sale bikes like FitNord's often run generic OEM hubs rather than a big-name brand, and that's the actual sticking point - not the spanner work, but finding out whether the freehub body is separately replaceable or whether the whole rear hub needs swapping. I can't confirm what hub is actually laced into the 800FS's wheel from here, so before you commit either way, pull the wheel and have a look at the hub shell/freehub for any stamped brand or model markings. If you can get a photo of that, I can chase down whether it's a serviceable design and what the replacement part actually is.

If it turns out to be a sealed, no-name unit with no available spares, that becomes a "whole wheel" job rather than a "freehub" job - which tips it back toward the shop simply because of parts access, not skill.
