Also, many manufacturers can detect the use of a tuning device or deristricting method and may decline a repair under warranty if it was modified from the intended original specification. You can use EMax to deristrict your EP801 , works like a charm

Markus the programmer will take care of you, with a 30mn remote control session.

You got to have a pc, a PCE02, and an internet acess, ETUBE project, and of MiniMax the deristrict Windows app. Price is 119€

The deristrict can.work with Auto-shift, Free-shift, it's very easy really, only software, nothing hardware, simple, clean and effective.

The speed limit can be raise to 50 kmh, you can set the gears, the light, the circumferenve and others parameters.

An Update on EMax tuning on a EP801 or EP6. The new software update, (Ver2.5) allows for you to do the entire upgrade yourself with no remote session required.

This is the process :

You need to get a Shimano PCE02 interface cable. It has a USB-A port to plug into your laptop. And a SD300 Etube port to plug into your motor.

You need to download the ETube Professional software for windows on your laptop. Here is the link. It is free.

E-TUBE PROJECT Professional is a Windows app created specifically for dealers and connection devices. By connecting your bicycle to a PC with a cable, you can perform detailed operational checks on the bicycle, perform maintenance, or get riding tips.

With the PCE02 cable plugged into the motor ETube port, but not plugged into the laptop. Install the ETube Professional software for windows on your laptop. After installing it, open the programme. It will then prompt you to plug the USB cable into the PC. This will install the USB driver for the PCE02 cable.

When complete, you should be able to go online with your motor with the Shimano software.

You don't need the ETube Professional software. It was just needed to install the USB driver. So press disconnect, and close the software.

Download the MiniMax software from EMAX. It is free. Here is the link.

With the PCE02 cable plugged into the motor ETube port, and plugged into the laptop. Run the .exe file. You will get this screen.

Press the "Open Port" button, (Top right corner) Then the "Get Information" button. This will read your Serial Number to sent to EMax. When it's finished reading. Take a screenshot.

Send an Email to EMax with the screenshot. [email protected]

Tell them you want to license the software, to upgrade the speed limit to 50kph. They will reply with a Paypal account for you to transfer 119 Euros. Send Markus the 119 and he will send you back the License Number to activate the software.

On the motor. Disconnect the big battery cable.

Disconnect all the Etube Port cables. You can leave in the speed sensor cable.

Plug in the PCEO2 cable into any of the E-Tube ports on the motor. Plug the USB cable into the laptop.

Start the MiniMax software. Select the "Direct Connection" Box. (This will power the motor from the computers USB port). Press the "Open Port" button, (Top right corner) Then the "Get Information" button. Enter in the licence number in the Licience Key Box.

When you do this. In the Tab on the right, an Update Motor Firmware box will appear. Press it. It will take about 5 mins. (Do not touch anything whilst this is happening)

When this is done, you can enter a speed up to 50kph in the bottom right hand corner and press. "set speed limit" button.

Emax helped me install di2 on a mechanical motor, yes they program the motor from the factory to either electronic or mechanical. You need the pce2 cable/computer and minimax to reprogram the motor. Thank you to emax

It's an awesome break-through by the EMax Team. They have worked out how to change the Region to US 45kph. So no more having to install new firmware.

You just upgrade your motor to firmware 4.4. Then go in with the licensed version of EMax, and set the region to US 45kph. So simple.

Absolutely fantastic work by Peter and the team from EMax.

how much is a licence?

I can categorically state that having a Shimano motor that cuts off at 45kmh is fantastic.
It means that on fast fire road descents you can keep on cranking and not feel the weight of the bike or any resistance, or on particularly speedy jump sections, you can still get the "one pedal turn" kick from the motor to get you through even if you're exceeding the arbitrary 32kmh threshold.
It's a bit of a game changer, for me.

Normally on trails I'm below 25kph. But I use it for 2 things.

1) If I am commuting to the riding trail. I find it much safer to travel closer to the traffic speed.
2) If I'm lining up a jump. Hitting the limiter can cause you to get the speed wrong and case the jump ...... Ask me how I know this ....... 🤭🤭🤭

Can someone tell me how long it takes to get a license key and if this process is automated? I'm in Australia (opposite timezone to emax-tuning) and want to derestrict a friends bike.
Do I need to wait for the emax tuning guys to manually process an order or is it all automated? Thanks.

You need to send them the motors serial number. They check your serial number against the Shimano database to ensure their software is compatible. Then they send you a licence that is mated to that serial number.

So no automated process to buy the license. You need to email them.
 
The guys from EMAX normally respond quite fast on 7 days a week...
Please always send the complete electronic data of the bike (as screenshot or picture), so they can identify the type of the drive unit as well as the firmware versions currently installed on the bike. And yes, starting with the latest miniMax version 2.60, no more remote control session is necessary to speed up any Shimano STePS based bike. :)

I did derestrict my EP801 just recently... I sent them the .log file with serial number late in the evening and sent money via PayPal and 2nd day 9:00 I had my license code from Markus. So the response time was less than 10 hours.

So you dont need a pce03 to do this anymore? Does it install over bt or using only a pce02 cable?

There is no "pce03" ;)
And if you want to increase max. motor support speed on a DU-EP801 or DU-EP600 based bike, you always (once) need a cable bound SM-PCE02 (or the older SM-PCE1) interface. The Windows based miniMax - program only works in combination with such an interafce.
Once this is done, then you can change max. motor support speed also via Bluetooth.

Hi everyone
I’ve registered on the forum mainly to say thank you to the eMax team, and especially to Marcus. Thanks to him, my Orbea Kemen SUV has finally become the product I expected when I decided to go for an e-bike. On top of that, I’ve received a ton of useful advice, without which I’d probably still be completely lost in this topic.

With the latest version of emax tuning and a EP801 or EP6 motor is it possible to switch between derestricted (45km/h) and the legal limit (25km/h here in Australia) using the mobile app?

Or is this only possible with the pce usb cable?
 
Yes. You can switch the speed to 25kph maximum with the phone app over bluetooth. But you cannot switch the region without a PC and the cable. So if investigated by a Shimano Agent. They would see a US region, but the speed set to 25kph.

But if anyone other than Shimano looked at it. e.g. (The PoPo) They would just see 25kph speed because you need special software and the cable to see the region.

Yes, exactly like described already from @Astro66. (y)
Changing destination settings (e.g. "EU", "US" and "US class 3") is only possible via a cable bound SM-PCE02 interface and the Windows based miniMax - program. However, once the bike is set to e.g. "US class 3" mode (with max. 45km/h or 28mph), then you easily can program the max. motor support speed to any value in the range between 25km/h and 45km/h as often and as long as you want to via Bluetooth based eMaxMobileApp (for iOS or Android).
See also always in chapter 12 of the latest version of this document.
For further questions ideally directly send an email to the guys from eMax-Tuning and they normally will respond quite fast.
 
Just installed emax tuning derestriction on my Marin Trail E2. Simple and straightforward process but did need to buy a Shimano PCE02 cable. First class product with great support from the developers. Would recommend highly. Anyone want yo hire the cable in the uk drop me a line. Thanks for your help Markus👍
