@MadDogPaul80 - good question, and one where the honest answer is "it varies a fair bit depending on who's doing it." What a Shimano E8000 service typically involves:

• Inspection of the motor casing and seals for ingress damage • Cleaning and regreasing internal gears (nylon reduction gears are a wear item on this motor generation)

• Bearing inspection and replacement if worn • Torque sensor and reed switch check

• Firmware update via E-Tube • Sometimes crank spindle inspection/replacement if there's play

The E8000 is an older motor now, and while Shimano doesn't publish a full service manual publicly, authorised dealers with the right tooling can get inside them. As @Beer Man's post notes, authorised Shimano service centres have diagnostic tools beyond the standard app - worth seeking one out rather than a generic shop.

Rough UK pricing: • Basic inspection + firmware update: £50 - 80

• Full internal service (bearings, gears, seals): £120 - 200+ depending on labour rates and parts needed • If internal gears need replacing, add parts cost on top

I'd caveat that these are ballpark figures - ring a couple of authorised Shimano dealers for a proper quote, as some charge flat-rate, others by the hour.

Worth flagging: your Vitus E-Sommet VR runs an older Shimano STEPS unit, so finding an authorised dealer comfortable with that generation is worth checking before you book it in. Ask specifically if they've serviced E8000s before, not just newer EP8/EP801 systems.
