Cost of replacement motor when out of warranty?

Does anyone know how much it will cost to replace the motor on a 2020 Levo when out of warranty?

I’m thinking about buying a Levo Comp 2020 but after reading a thread on here about motor failures, I’m a little nervous. At the moment I have a Haibike with Bosch Motor ( not the latest) and I know if the bearings fail, I can buy a kit for about £90 to replace them. Does this apply to the Brose motor?

Yes you're lucky you have performance line bearings down the road! But 2 years warranty also.

Cost for the Mag S would be more than for the Alu S - if you can find one

I'm seriously considering a normal bike again.
Running an EMTB is a rich mans sport and I feel like we are all guinea pigs! I don't doubt that Specialised warranty is excellent but it's the hassle of being without a bike, or even worse, being stranded in the middle of nowhere that concerns me.

I think you should reconsider...you'll be missing out on the greater freedom, enjoyment, range & exploration capability that emtb offers. Maybe get the base model?

BTW it's highly unlikely you'll need to change the motor. Bearings, seals, kits of various types are already available so you can fix the motor especially with the help of performancelinebearings and other excellent services will appear

But if I buy the base model, the components are not the best, so it will cost me more in upgrades eventually. I really like my Haibike apart from the weight. It's virtually impossible to get it in the back of my Sorrento on my own, without taking the front wheel and battery out. My Wife owns a Giant Liv Intrigue and its so much lighter than my Haibike. I'm going to a Specialised dealer to have a look at a Levo and see how much they weigh in comparison.

We went out cycling with my Brother in Law last week and he has an Orange P9 and it's as light as a feather. We did 35 miles and 3500 feet and he handled it without issue, so it got me thinking...should I buy a normal bike and increase my fitness level.

Decisions decisions!!

According to the service manual, changing out the motor takes less than an hour. If mine craps out after the warranty expires, I'll just put in another motor

But you wouldn't want to be buying a new motor every 2 years would you? Also, I think I've read that you need special software to pair the motor with the battery?

I have 2 Levo's and I can switch the batteries around no issues at all so there is no need to have batteries/motors paired before installation.

But if you bought a brand new motor, would you need to have it installed at a dealer or would it be plug and play? I'm sure I've read somewhere that it needs to be installed at a dealers, due to the requirement of specialist software. I may be mistaken though.

The only thing I can see is if it comes with standard Brose Firmware. if that is the case you will need a dealer to flash it to the Specialized version, not a big deal.

We've covered this elsewhere, but I'll point out again that the bike + motor manufacturers have to step-up and answer these FUD concerns.

Look, anything on a bike could break and be a significant problem/cost. But you know what a broken chain, wheel, mech, or frame means to you. A broken motor is a bit of an unknown, as is the long-term reliability of technology that's only really been around for 2-3 years in their current versions.

Other than offering decent 2 year warranties, most bike/motor manufacturers have not answered the question about long-term and out-of-warranty repairs.

Kudos to Bosch for releasing the bearing refresh kit - That went a long way to reassure me that I can be riding my eeb in 5 years time... Now we need the same from Brose and Shimano...

Well said, especially when they are asking upwards of £4000, which is a big investment.

I have the Surge 27.5 (that’s the 29). It’s an absolutely incredible bike. I had a 2019 Levo on order then did full back to back test rides on both bikes as the Levo was delayed forever. The Orange suited me much better.

Also I wanted solid custom UK buil, suitable for the weather here (it rains a lot in the Calder Valley!) and all evidence suggests the Specialized bikes aren’t that well suited. Obviously Orange are a little different and many find them a marmite choice but that never stopped me :)

Naturally YMMV.

To bring it back on topic. I think there’s a side point around how different manufacturers mount and house the motors that affects reliability. Now whether it’s the popularity of the Vitus bikes or the design around the motor I’m not sure but they sure as hell have a lot of failures of the Shimano motors.

I think Specialized have a similar issue in some territories. They’d never share the figures but they would certainly be interesting to see.
