It was a very confusing currency system before the decimal system. Most of my knowledge about the UK monetary system came from historical sources like Monty Python, Fawlty Towers and Benny Hill. I miss their wisdom.Half a Crown was 2/6d and 8 to a £

Some of us are still struggling with the metric system. Went in to butchers last week for a pound of bacon he laughed and said its not pounds any more grandpa its the metric system we use nowadays. Ok I said give me half a pound of metric then.Very difficult for some of us to understand. At least the UK doesn’t use rocks or stones to weigh things…cause that would be crazy![]()
At least you still have Miles, here in Germany its all metric, though 500 grams is often referred to as a Pfund (German for a pound weight) and a "Morgen" (morning) is an a rough measure of land area similar to an acre (how much can be plowed in a morning). Did you know that the reason why the British unit of currency is called a Pound was because it used to be worth and was fixed at the equivalent of a pound weight of silver (240 silver pennies)! Some of us are still struggling with the metric system. Didnt know that one. Long an short ton another one. I worked in drilling industry for a few years drill pipe was measured in tenths of a foot American measurement I was toldAt least you still have Miles, here in Germany its all metric, though 500 grams is often referred to as a Pfund (German for a pound weight) and a "Morgen" (morning) is an a rough measure of land area similar to an acre (how much can be plowed in a morning). Yes and the pre-metric British system diverged from the US one back in Victorian times, mostly for trade reasons, the Ton was increased from 2000lbs to 2240lbs which is exactly a metric Tonne which is why a hundredweight is actually 112lbs and the pint went to 20 fluid ounces which made a gallon closer to 5 liters and bought joy to beer drinkers all over the empire.
I also have a sneaking suspicion that a Furlong (220 yards 1/8 of a mile or 5 to the kilometer)is not a natural measure.
I have little experience with that but I think even here in Germany pipe and tube dimensions are mostly if not all inch sizes although sold in metric equivalents, same also for wire gauge size!Didnt know that one. So can I get a two metre pipe three quarter inch bore hahaI have little experience with that but I think even here in Germany pipe and tube dimensions are mostly if not all inch sizes although sold in metric equivalents, same also for wire gauge size!
Much on bikes also, e.g. 31.8mm stem dia is really 1 .1/4 inch!
If not at your local plumbing shop Amazon.de have 19mm I.D and OD pipe available. So can I get a two metre pipe three quarter inch bore haha![]()

About twenty years ago, I went into a woodyard to get some planed "two by one". In other words I wanted some smooth timber that measured 2 inches by 1 inch. The man told me "we don't sell 2x1 any more, we've gone metric. It's now 50x25 millimeters." Ok then I'll have 2 meters of 50x25 then.I have little experience with that but I think even here in Germany pipe and tube dimensions are mostly if not all inch sizes although sold in metric equivalents, same also for wire gauge size!

That’s difficult to fathom.About twenty years ago, I went into a woodyard to get some planed "two by one". In other words I wanted some smooth timber that measured 2 inches by 1 inch. "How much do you want?
I'll have 2 meters please, I replied.
To be told - "We only do it in 6 foot or 12 foot lengths!"![]()
