4th derailleur in 14 month

Also this is the side effect of 120nm with run on when ya stop pedalling you hear a noise but the motor carries on.... this happened right at the fully loaded point of a technical climb.....

When comes the day that a mgu as light and as refined as bosch standard drive train comes along in a 180mm travel bike for 21-22kg i will definitely jump on the mgu bandwagon.

For now, they are too heavy, not refined enough and bike options a shitty and limited.
 
Every Shimano RD I've broken... and I've broken my fair share as been at the p-knuckle/clutch. I had a little run, where I broke two RDs within a month on my last eMTB. I was just about ready to give up...

Now on my Norco Range I've worn out a deore RD and chain within 250 miles/50k vert... ugh.

I've taken out 3 and along with 2 wheels in the last 10k miles on a Levo Gen3 and I'm careful. You just never know when a rock (central Texas) is gonna fly up and ruin your day.

Jaysus.

I bought a Rail last summer. Have just 1000 miles on it now. This week it ate the tension jockey wheel. I put my other bikes derailleur to get me going. Was considering the di2 set up but at 500 euro for all the bits and then 300 euro for the derailleur alone I might give it a miss seeing this....

Back when my 2 boys rode, they used to smash derailleurs and hangers quicker than I could order new ones 🤬

The Shimano mechs have a pin holding the knuckles in place, a small hole drilled in the solid side (top side of knuckle) where the pin sits inside the alu, allows you to tap the pin out.

If you could be bothered, you could probably make a couple of good ones out of that trashed collection.

Literally, my derailleur hanger alignment tool was used 4-5 times a week just to keep them two wrecking squad boys rolling.

I even took the two of them to the garage at one stage and explained after every crash, they needed to flip the bike and slowly shift into granny gear as a bent hanger or mech was going to result with the mech cage in the spokes and wrapped around the wheel... it was endless.

Here's a short video shot in Derby, Tasmania when they were about 14 & 15, awesome riders and I created that beast but they shit they used to smash and wear out broke my heart 🤣

 
This was my 3rd RD on this ebike.
Moved away from SGS (Long Cage) and started using GS (medium cage), and since then, zero problems (knok on wood).

I always found RD cages to close to the ground, when using dish plate sixe cassete cogs and 27.5 wheels.

Maybe it's time to bring back the 3 pulley RD, like Suntour did back in the day!

I fit BBB Rollerboys, they roll really nice but most important have no holes in them to trap crap in.

Don't bother with the fancy ceramic bearings Rollerboys, tried a set and found they don't last any longer (or roll any better).

There is an open hole with a pin visible where the yellow arrows are, drill a 1.5mm hole where the red arrows are and tap the pin out with a 1mm pin punch or the same small drill bit you used to drill the hole, this can be dripped with some superglue on the top to fill the hole and touched up with a pen if it matters.

They are not meant to be worked on but desperate times can mean desperate measures.

Yours is not worth it with a bent cage but a few minor damaged ones with a broken knuckle can easily be saved.

If you have several damaged ones, a bit of time can build a good one.

I was in derby a couple of years back. They air garn track is such a cool flow jump trail. Thanks for sharing, that brings back some good memories .
 
Bummer. I've gone through the same in the same amount of time. Also taken out 2 rear triangles in the process.
 
Downgrade to something more like the power that bicycles are designed to stand, or upgrade to a motorcycle and this will not happen again … with the benefits of having a throtle 🙄

Photo I posted above was on a 2018 Kenevo. That’s second gen Specilized Levo motor, not exactly high power/torque.

Ive actually destroyed 2 derailleurs on the mtb 2 and 2 e in 14 months..... so yes sticks and trail debris still exist when riding the mtb too.....
 
Side rant.

What ever happened to the sacrificial replacable hangars?
The industry seems to have forgotten about sacrificial parts, frame and derrailleur damage.
Transmission is the stupedist thing change i've seen. Lets just get ride of the hangar altogether and go for frame damaging instead. IDIOTS!

UDH aint much better, they are too damn strong and dont break off as you can see with this failure state. The frame got some minor damage, the udh bent slighly and the sacrificial part was the derailleur...
 
I've been through 3 SLX RDs - they're made of cheese. I put on a Deore & TBH it's shifting better than ever.
 
I broke 2 Shimano XT derailleurs before switching to SRAM Transmission. Never broken the SRAM yet. Have bent a cage and kicked the derailleur back. But not broken.
 
Also on my 4 in about a year and a half. I am now buying 2 packs of Deore RDs for £27 each so as to always have a spare in the riding pack. Latest one went last week.

In my emtb use so far the best derailleur has been mechanical 12-speed Eagle GX combined with sturdy Santa Cruz UDH hanger. Derailleur and hanger has taken multiple hits and eventually hanger gave in but derailleur still going strong after 3600km of hard use.
