2021 Santa Cruz Bullit

Got my Bullit finished today. Picked it up from LSB on thursday after toooooo long wait because of harbour strikes here in Finland. First bike I build from the box, nice way to spend weekend . Totally stock S-model, only mods are brakes because I don`t like Codes and they don`t like me. And some dyedbro protection. I think otherwise the spec is perfect for me. Wasn`t sure about the colour but after watching it whole weekend I like it. I sold my Levo already few weeks ago and can`t wait to ride this but weather is really shit now, maybe for whole week, so we`ll see when that happens.

This winter in NorCal has been so wet we just went out & played in the mud anyway, BTW, I use the XL fender and it really helps keep mud & spray out of my face, if you can find the Mudslinger you'll be happy, just spray under down-tube, bottom bracket, back of seatpost & suspension links(NOT on brakes/rotors).

Plan was to put my RRP proguard from Levo but I have lost the adaptors to dit it to Fox 38 and those Fox own mudguards are out of stock everywhere. It was same thing with RRP when I tried to get one, out of stock. But you are right, this kind of mudguard is really great!

But Tradeinn had them in stock so I ordered one. I got reply also from RRP that they’ll ship me the adapters I lost by the price of postage

Finally had change for decent ride yesterday . First ride was on full snow and summer tires so there wasn`t much to say how the bike felt except had to change ”spare” wheels with contis because I have heard that Maxxis 3C don`t work so well on minus celcius degrees. Anyway I`m looking forward to see if those OEM Maxxis tires are so good as every claims. But contis are so good so no hurry to change back . I think generally Levo motor is better but Shimano is so close so it really doesn`t matter. Takes some time to get use to power cutting out in the end of the power curve what Levo didn`t have. It kept giving power as long as you just pedalled. Otherways trailmode (set up similary for both my bikes) are prettty close. And I was little worried about 27.5” rear wheel compared to 29” Levo on rock and roots but that wasn`t an issue. This was just trail riding, don`t know when I have change to take it to bike park but I`m sure it will fly

As far as I know Philip Fox only supplies one version now and also did away with their original “e-tune” of the damper as well.

Mine is a 2022, had the larger one (updated now to 2025 internals)… I wonder if Fox has incorporated that into all forks? I suppose one could go to LBS and measure 38’s on a new model, non ebike?

This is what an employee of Santa Cruz Sales Germany told me:

"I have received feedback from production and it is indeed the case that, according to the current production status, we are installing the HT68 variant in the Bullit."

I think it's weird that they are installing forks with more rake for Bullit because it makes steering faster.... Also bit weird that rake measure is dependent of crown measure...anyway, maybe I check my fork when I have time. I know that SC has different token specs on Bullit forks than standard. I wanted to take some tokens off because as light guy, I couldn't use all the travel. I checked from fox page that in e-tune fork there's 3 tokens as standard. It was suprise that there was 4, no wonder I couldn't use all the travel

This is my Bullit fork, so HT68 and 44 rake. What ever you buy, buy it with 44 rake

My bullit has developed a terrible rattle, and I'm pretty sure it's coming from the motor. Has anyone else noticed this? It knocks pretty loudly when I'm sending it downhill. I'm wondering if it could possibly be anything else besides the motor. Headset is tight. Pivot bolts are tight. Shock bolts tight. Brake bolts tight. I'm running out of ideas...

Had my Bullit for a few months now and really couldn't be happier with it. I purchased it knowing it wasn't the latest/greatest and figured I would ride it for a few years till standards settle, clear winner among motor ecosystems emerges and possibly solid state tech for batteries gets adopted.

After putting something like 300km on it during autumn/winter months I am now trying to figure out how to keep it going for as long as I can . The ride feel of this bike fits me just right, it's predictable, stable, assuring, yet maneuverable in tight and sketchy sections. Corners really well too! I am far from a pro rider, but I've been riding for ~8 years now and can find enjoyment on basically any terrain, from alpine to natural loam to bikeparks. My last bike was Orbea Rallon and I loved it, was really worried how I would get a long with a heavier bike with more travel, but happy to say I have no regrets and don't miss it all!

Anyway, the reason I'm writing this is to ask members if anyone found replacement batteries for sale? I'd like to have one as a spare in case they become unavailable down the line. I checked Santa Cruz spare parts page (Parts & Tools), but it's not listed there. Haven't yet contacted the dealer where I purchased the bike, since I ordered it online from another country. Is that the only option? Thanks in advance for any tips.

You just need a Shimano Steps BT-E8036 630Wh battery. It’s a standard battery so not specific to the Bullit. Be worth trying to source another battery cover also so you can swap out batteries easier.

But I started to think that specially winter time I only ride once a week so there's no sense to have extra battery and even in summer I really don't need one. And if I buy another battery I may end up situation that both of them goes out of warranty at the same time...so at this point I¨m not buying another one, specially now when the original bttery died just after 1600km's and 7-8 months...maybe after bike is out of warranty...or maybe just after battery dies again...this is generic Shimano battery so I trust plenty will be available...at least until they make totally new one...

Seeing it's a normal mass produced Shimano battery you are probably right... no need to rush anything. Maybe after Shimano introduces a new motor system, perhaps on 48V architecture, these parts could become rarer. But they should be plentiful for a while longer.

At first winter ride (snow and -7 to -10 celsius) it gave E914 error. Then on a second ride again, same thing and it wasn`t even that cold. After I got new battery problem was solved.

It's not the latest or greatest but for 5K$ I couldn't pass it up, wanted an ebike for years and couldn't afford it.

Congrats! I’ve had several Santa Cruz over the years, from original Hecklers through V-10… built strong, beautiful workmanship, fun!
Currently on 2022 Bullit, updated 2025 internals on 38 fork, custom-tuned X-2 shock, Sram Maven brakes, bike can do anything (lol, can’t say same for me anymore)!
