Speed sensor errors on the SyncDrive (your 2021 Trance runs a Yamaha-built SyncDrive Pro) are one of the most misdiagnosed faults out there — the good news is it's almost never the motor itself. It's the sensor, the magnet, or the cable, and you can usually sort it in the garage.

Work through these in order — cheapest and most likely first:

1. The magnet and sensor gap
The speed sensor reads a small magnet on the rear rotor (or a spoke magnet on some builds). Check the magnet is still there and clean — mud, or a magnet that's crept out of alignment after a rotor/wheel change, throws the reading instantly. The sensor and magnet need to pass close together; if the gap's opened up, the pickup drops out.

2. Thru-axle and wheel seating
A rear wheel that isn't fully seated or torqued shifts the magnet away from the sensor. Pull the wheel, remount it properly and torque the axle. Sounds too simple — it fixes a genuine chunk of these.

3. The sensor cable
This is the big one. Riders on here consistently find that what looks like a dead motor is actually a damaged or unplugged speed-sensor cable — often after assembly, a service, or wheel/rotor work snagging it. The connector can be tucked inside the rear triangle. Trace the cable from the sensor back to the motor, check for chafing or a pin that's backed out, and reseat the connector firmly. Owner reports point to inspecting/replacing that cable before ever condemning the motor.

4. Read the actual error
Plug into the Giant RideControl app and note the exact code — an Error 21 on this generation is specifically a speed-sensor/connection fault rather than anything internal. That confirms you're chasing the right thing and not a torque-sensor or wiring gremlin.

The reassuring bit: on this forum the PW-X generation racks up plenty of genuine failures (bearings, water ingress), but the "speed sensor error = motor's dead" panic is usually a £0 fix. Whole-motor replacement for a sensor fault is the last resort, not the first.

If steps 1–3 come up clean and the code persists, that's your handover point — a Giant dealer can check the sensor and harness on their diagnostics before anything gets replaced under warranty.
