    So how's the 9th April Freak-Out going?

Should I stay with my much modified boring old >5,000 mile 2022 Trek Rail 5 or should I spunk a load of cash on a new bike? If so, which one, and why? And don't tell me that Atherton bike because although I'm a function before fashion bloke that really is too fugly for me. Suspect the wife...

    Zeb A2 160mm with Charger 3.0 and Smashpot V2 - upgrade to Charger 3.1?

Is it worth upgrading the damper from Charger 3.0 to Charger 3.1? New 3.1 damper is currently about £250 3.0 to 3.1 upgrade kit is about £65 but videos do look complicated (have never before taken a damper to pieces).

Functions of a Battery Management System

Seems to be some confusion about 'flat' batteries so thought this info from Google would be interesting. Specifically, a BMS protects a battery from complete discharge because Lithium-Ion batteries (always?) require having some residual charge to be able to recharge. I think @cream can add to...

    Bye-bye Fillmore valves

As said here: What did you buy your ebike this week? Bought four new Presta valves. Why? Changed four tyres and at same time fitted Fillmore valves. Clogged up several times while injecting Muc-Off tubeless sealant, probably due to Muc-Off sealant particle size. After fitting Fillmore valves...

    Schwalbe radial tyres

Look interesting, any information other than what's on the Schwalbe Web site? https://www.schwalbe.com/en/radialtires-mtb

Dropped off our January 2022 Trek Rail 5's to have the motors serviced at eBike Motor Centre

My Large has done over 3,000 miles and wife's Medium has done over 1,000 miles. Now out of warranty so time for some TLC from @Bearing Man "Bosch Gen 4 Motor Upgrade" plus anything else they think should be replaced. Said they need not ask me if something should or should not be done, if they...

When is an eMTB too heavy?

As @Plummet has said, it's when it's too heavy to lift over a fence especially towards the end of a ride when running out of energy. For me (as for Plummet) thats when the bike weighs over 26kg. Few weeks ago decided our 2022 (alloy) Rail 5's were getting too heavy so been putting them on a...

    My Maxxis DHR2 looks weird!

Maxxis DHR2 DD Maxxgrip 29" fitted 24 October 2023, done exactly 600 miles. Has loads of grit/chalk (?) in the tread, never seen that before, or perhaps I've never noticed. Perhaps been running wrong pressure? Tyre looks f**ked ... Ride a lot on the chalk and mud South Downs. Edit: 2022...

    155mm ISIS crankset price range!

Miranda cranks about £60 Hope cranks about £170 5Dev cranks about £450 Bought Miranda cranks. What do I get by instead spending either 2.8 times more on Hope cranks or 7.5 times more on 5Dev cranks?

Did you change anything after fitting shorter cranks?

Just replaced 165mm cranks with 155mm cranks (2022 Trek Rail 5) By how much did you shorten your cranks, and did you need to also change seat height/bar height/chain ring/stem/other? Or did you just ride it and leave everything else the same as before and quickly adapt?

Went through water today, wet f**king feet again, p*issed off :(

Trailcross EPS Mid. Water came in around the tongue. Both feet. Not amused. Got some Salomon walking boots which are absolutely waterproof but they're heavy as f**k. Is there anything genuinely waterproof? At what price?

Shimano 12 speed chain longevity vs price

Did some research into Shimano 12 speed chains by watching videos and reading reviews. What I figured out was roughly this, using Deore (M6100) as the base: Deore (M6100) life index = 100 (no SIL-TEC coating, rusts) SLX ..... (M7100) life index = 100 (same chain as Deore but with inner...

Trutune fork insert - first ride

Also posted here: https://www.emtbforums.com/threads/what-did-you-buy-your-ebike-this-week.8156/post-514010 Bought a TruTune MTB Air Fork Insert, Short for Rockshox/EMTB. Insert arrived early yesterday so put it in my Zeb A2 (2023) 160mm forks (no tokens). Previously had about 66 psi which...

Schwalbe front and Maxxis rear, is this sacrilege?

Front and rear Maxxis Assegai Maxxgrip DD are packing up horribly with the mud turning them into slicks. Replacing our fronts with Schwalbe Magic Mary Ultra Soft Super Gravity, and rears with Maxxis Minion DHR 2 Maxxgrip DD. I feel dirty doing this. ;)

Rail (625Wh) Mino Link vs longer stroke shock?

Trek Rail alloy 2022 - may want to increase rear height to make steering 'faster'. Have two choices: 1. Move Mino Link from Low to High to increase rear height by ~10mm 2. Remove a couple of spacers from the Ohlins TTX22.m coil which will increase height by ~12mm (not allowing for sag)...

Will never again buy Five 10 or any other Adidas products

In spite of Anheuser-Busch's Bud Light (Dylan Mulvaney) and Calvin Klein's trans man in a bra (Bappie Kortram) marketing debacles, Adidas has promoted women's swimwear modeled by a 6'2" man! Misogynism. No more Adidas, Anheuser-Busch, or Calvin Klein products for me. (n)

The home made tools and tricks thread

Took a few minutes to make the below basic gizmo from 15mm x 2mm aluminium strip. After releasing Shimano clutch use it to hook the derailleur onto the chain stay. Lots of loose chain so easy rear wheel removal and installation.

    Alternatives to 'standard' derailleurs ...

The standard derailleur hanging down next to the rear wheel is a prime target for branches, rocks, and general debris etc. Why do we still have this horribly exposed contraption inherited from road bikes? It is really up to the two major players, Sram and Shimano, to come up with a better...

Rail (625Wh) Do you really need Rail chain guards/guide?

Have 2022 Alloy Rail 5's with Shimano drivetrains. When it gets really mucky mud and other debris can accumulate in the front chain guard/guide. Is there any practical reason why I need these chain guards, or can I take them off? (always have derailleur clutches on).
