Just seen that Canyon and Commencal will be both be debuting a concept Avinox gearbox based bike at Eurobike.👍

That escalated quickly!

This has my attention, in a good way. That said, a 'bike with a motor and an internal gearbox' that will probably need more power and a larger battery to overcome the additional drag just seems so much like a dirt bike, and I hope it's not that.

man if this is good, it’s starting to feel like domination. It’s insane how quick they’re dropping product. This will be the 3rd motor (4 if you count RS as different enough) in 3 years. They’ve also dropped 4-5 different amflow frames, 4-5 different batteries and now range extenders. They’re moving insanely fast. What a time to be a buyer.

Ok,after the PL, PX, pR, now the TL at low price, a Gearbox in the future... it would be wise to change forum name:

From eMTBforum, to, AVINOXWHAT'ELSE? Forum.

Time to look elsewhere to have a good times after a ride...

The "G" stands for gearbox, so if no gears I'm thinking more like a CVT. On a commuter eh, no brainer. Canyon is saying a Torque which is much more interesting.

I guess Canyon had to do something big after the battery fiasco in order to get themselves back in the conversation.

I'm guessing whatever we see tomorrow won't be available until well into 2027 though.

Anyone got any links to these leaks? Someone said it was on the Canyon website, but I just took look and didn't see anything obvious. I found this article but it seems like AI slop probably pulling from speculative conversations like ours, with nothing new or conclusive.

If they truly have a prototype, that will be pretty awesome.

I will be less excited if it is a unridable "concept bike" with a BS empty motor casing that could in theory contain a gearbox if they actually were to make one. Some of you will be old enough to remember the Cannondale's "Pong" bike, or their R4000 Rollerblade TT bike that used inline skate wheels to improve front end aerodynamics. Also, Specialized has had some similarly ridiculous concept bikes that looked like something out of a comic book. I know there is a history of that sort of thing from the car world, but these ideas need to be somewhat grounded in reality for me to think of them as anything other than a publicity stunt.

I'm sure there are some frustrated people on this forum thinking "wait a tic, they haven't even delivered my Amflow frame or range extender yet, and now the bastards are already working on a new project???". In other words, moving insanely fast with innovations is only cool if they actually are able to produce them and get them into consumer's hands. Otherwise they will just be pissing people off...at an insanely fast rate!

Not sure what changes for you in a hypothetical future where Avinox dominates the e-bike space. How is that different from pre-Avinox when Bosch dominated the space?

Yeo, I'll be watching. I'm hoping in 2 to 3 years there'l be a comparably light enough and refined mgu unit mated to a 180mm carbon shredder. That would get me interested in upgrading the cresty.

PS I have destroyed 4 derraileurs in 14 months. I really look forward to a no D E-bike.

When you have an army of enginieers, un unlimited budget and government backing for world domination its pretty easy.....
Well not easy, but a shit ton easier than when constrained by budgets and not getting chunks of governement money thrown your way.

Let's not pretend it's only government meddling leading to this. Bosch is more than big and rich enough to innovate at this pace if they wanted to. They're just a slow unwieldy dinosaur getting out competed by a young hungry company. Tale as old as time.

Thats probably on the low side for me and shimano 12spd derailleurs lol
Linkglide 11s/mardrone waaaay better and last

There was always a hatful of other motor systems competing against Bosch, just as there still are with Avinox, one or other of them always had there head in front at various times, no different now.

Whatever folks brand preferences, it can’t be healthy to have a monopoly, so hope we don’t end up there.

The other thing is, are we arguing about stuff that hasn’t even been officially announced now?! 🤣

Some Avinox guys will be reaching deep into their pockets again if this is true, and same for the M3s in 18 months time. It’s like they have an Avinox hand clamped tightly around some their nethers for sure! 😱

I really hope so! The Pinion MGU was a bit of a letdown, would be grand if Avinox released a powerful eCVT.
My main concern with an e-cvt is that I think it'd be terrible/unrideable with a dead battery, but maybe there's a way to engineer that problem away.

But even for normal gearboxes or derailers, I can't help but think like 5-6 gears is enough, and that might simplify a normal gearbox.

Best thing ever would be if it's the same form factor and fits any existing avinox frame...

That would be a boon for bike manufacturers, no need to redesign the frame etc, but then those same manufacturers preferring to sell you a new bike is also the reason why Avinox won’t sell it direct to consumers either.

Loads of folks on here want the M2S to retrofit, but you can’t buy them.

Same with other manufacturers to be fair, it’s about selling bikes.

Why this reluctance towards anything Avinox related? Please share your experience with Avinox , what they really did to you, maybe we can understand and you'll feel better and maybe you'll change your mind about leaving.

But if you must, there are alternatives to this forum....you can try Bosch/Shimano groups on FB while they are still active...Some say that new Bosch hub motor rips.

Bosch should open up an LLC in Taiwan or the like, design at Bosch but sell through the LLC. and offer a 2000w, throttle optional. No top speed limit motor that just so happens to use the same case mounting points as the Gen 5. Even make them available on Alibaba for like $700 for retrofit.
In the US this works to do questionable things and just limits damages to the LLC. Not certain that Euro regulators would turn a blind eye though.

Without power you'd just spin the internals around like you're in neutral, I think.
I think it depends on what you attach the crankshaft to. If you make the sun gear directly attached to the cranks then I think it'd technically work, but the gearing would probably suck. Planetaries melt my brain though, so I might be wrong.

Do you think that's why Avinox is popular? Such a motor would get no traction.

Well :

1. Buy now
2. Regret tomorrow
3. Get the bike in 2028
4. Preorder 2029 bike in 2027
5. Denial , capitulation 😵🪦☠️
