Crestline x DJI - RS 181 SPECTRE Edition

It will be nice when the embargo is finally lifted and all of our rumors and suspicions are confirmed or denied. It’s gonna feel like an eternity waiting until June to get my bike haha. Guess it’s better than last year ordered my Druid core in April and didn’t see it until September. Forbidden really dropped the ball badly with those bikes and it makes me reluctant to order another Forbidden.

This is pretty common regardless whom you buy from. I have waited an extended period of time nearly every complete or frame I have purchased in the last 10 years. There's not really a lot they can do if it's stuck on a boat or in customs. They only have a ballpark as to when to expect it. Good time to go touch grass while you wait.

The new 181.2 Team Edition build has SRAM AXS power cord and GX Eagle AXS T-Type derailleur. Does SmoothShift actually work right away, or do I need to set it up? I've read in this thread that a DJI-compatible extension cord is needed, or will the SRAM AXS power cord do the same thing?

You should be good with all that included.

Sorry for putting you in the spotlight and in an uncomfortable position. I know these are two completely different categories of bikes, but now that you’ve had the rare chance to ride the Crestline RS 181.2, would you still stand by your opinion of the Nicolai S16 suspension?
"It is the best suspension feeling out of any bike I have ever ridden."

Also, having ridden so many top bikes in recent years, which one stands out to you as the best overall package?

Yep. The suspension on it is incredible. There’s a real difference in having no chain and mech moving around on the back. There’s very little pedal kickback on this system too. It’s ultra sensitive and pretty bottomless feeling. If I could get that platform / feeling on any other bike I’d take it.

BTW - I was riding both bikes on the same trails. I had the Crestline with me on that trip too 👊

Makes me really excited to get my archibald ac1 soon, gonna be the only bike cool enough to keep me off the Crestline haha. Rode an ac1 in Whistler and not having that unsprung weight on the rear wheel does make a big difference

What a coincidence, so now we know the backdrop of the RS 181.2 review! 😀

How does the Crestline suspension actually feel? Is it as plush as your Nicolai S18, or more race-like, closer to the Unno Mith? I’m really torn between Crestline and Nicolai.
I test-rode the S18 and it was one of the plushest bikes I’ve ever felt. My only worry with S18 is the 600 Wh battery and I’m not a fan of extenders. Pinion is out for now because of the gearbox noise and awkward shifting.

Really curious to hear your take on the Crestline’s suspension. Many thanks.

Out of the 2 bikes, I prefer the crestline. Mainly because the 800wb battery and removable, and the Avinox motor.

The S18 is a good short range DH ebike, but so is the Crestline, so I kinda have 2 bikes for the same thing. But the Crestline is more versatile.

The S18 suspension is similar to that of the S16 MGU, but not nearly as good with the sensivitity and bottomless feeling.

The Crestline suspension is a bit more choppy, more pedal feedback. I'd recommend a Sickkick type hub to improve this a bit. Make no mistake its way preferable to most other bikes out there, but it doesn't quite match the S18 for me. But its no reason not to buy it, as the whole-bike as a package benefits are real.

Other converts might say "DUH, of course," but my recent switch from a Vivid Air to the new Vivid Coil really changed the rear suspension feel. It's smoother and more composed. Small sample set but if the only negative is a little more weight I'm all in.

@Greg Watts What's the maximum tire width you can fit on Crestline RS 181.2, frontand rear?
Annoyingly, Crestline don't publish a specific maximum tyre width figure anywhere obvious, but the search results do give us some useful real-world data points to work with. Here's what I can say with confidence.

The RS 181.2 is described as having "generous tire clearance" on Fanatik's product page, which tells us precisely nothing quantitative but at least confirms Crestline are aware it's a selling point.

In terms of what owners actually run: Pinkbike's review bike was running Schwalbe Magic Mary front and rear, and from our community data, @Rob Rides EMTB has noted the BB height measurements were taken with a Schwalbe Albert 2.5 rear and Magic Mary 2.5 front

- so 2.5" clears fine on both ends. @John_likes_bikes ran a build with Continental Kryptotal 2.4 Trail rear on his RS181.1, and the Spectre build data we have shows Maxxis Assegai 2.5 front and Minion DHR II 2.4 rear without issue.

What Crestline don't specify is a hard upper limit. The practical ceiling the community has pushed to is 2.5" on both wheels, and given the tighter clearance around the linkage area (worth noting: the S 180 had rear tyre clearance issues in heavy mud with a 2.5" Albert, which packed the frame sufficiently to stop the wheel spinning

I was hoping I'd be able to fit Schwalbe Big Betty 27.5x2.60". 😢

I know this has been discussed before but I am still not 100%
Can the oneup dropper use the entirety of the RH2 240mm seatpost insertion?
If not - how much room will i need to leave ensure the cable engages properly?

Not certain I follow.
If you subtract the overall length from the stack you get 340mm needed to insert the dropper fully. This does include the actuation mechanism.
Now I'm not a mathematician, but pretty certain that 340 is more than 240.
That 240 should bottom out the dropper in the frame leaving 100mm of the lower dropper exposed, but there is still a curve where the cable can go through the frame.
Not many trying to run a 240 on an RH2!
Is that what you were looking for?

So I guess a 200mm axs will basically slam into the frame but protudes 15mm because of the battery placement. Found a PB ad of this spectre with a 200mm post.

It's the height actually that typically rubs in that situation.
Height will change too good point, roughly the same as the width.

So we are still talking 2mm difference in height as well. I would "assume" this would work but maybe not?!

Any current Crestline owners care to chime in with 2.6" or more to inform us please?

Let me try to say it a bit clearer:
RH2 frame has 240mm insertion length - is that 240mm entirely usable by a Oneup dropper or will that interfere with dropper function due to a bad cable angle?

I haven’t run a 2.6, i prefer 2.4 but I would imagine a 2.6 would not be a problem. There’s plenty of space.

Apparently you can choose between 800, 600 and something in between when it comes to battery size. Does anyone ( or @Greg Watts ) know whether one could get a 200 or 300 Wh version of the battery? Trying to save some kilos for hybrid bike shuttle days with longer pedal sections.

Secondly, since I aim to have one bike only going forward and use the 181.2 as bike for park riding as well, removing the battery is a cool option. Any best practices to secure the cables that normally connect the motor to the battery and the dispaly to the battery to avoid noise a rattle?

There might be plenty of space for a tire when stationary, but let's not forget about frame flex.

One particular review mentions "compliance" in the rear (not the first time I've heard and read about this "feature" in Crestline) and then goes on to state: "there are actually tire marks on the inside of the swing arm." If they were able to get a 2.4 tire to rub the frame, 2.6 might be too wide for this bike. It's kind of strange they don't state the maximum tire width on their website.

I posted some reply’s regarding the flex but can’t remember of it was here or the other main crestline thread. Anyway, I don’t notice the bike being extremely flexy or overly flexy. For me i like the way it rides, it’s compliant, comfortable and fun/playful to ride. I had a bullit before the spectre, i also ran 2.4 tires on it and inside the seat and chain stay i had a lot of tire rub. It rubbed through the ride wrap and into the paint, on my spectre i have nothing.
I have about 500 miles on the spectre and had 8-900 on the bullit so if it was going to happen it would have. So like I said before I think there’s space, do with the info what you will, anyone is free to run there bike the way they want.

First I have heard of an in-between battery option..

Maybe wrap the connectors with some foam to remove rattles when going battery-less.

I would think the 600wh battery would help out in the park, weight for stability, and more speed for lift and to clear jumps!

Was mentioned in the recent Crestline e-mail:
We’ve ordered extra batteries in all sizes. If you have a preference for 600 Wh, 800 Wh, or a size in between, please note it at checkout. We’ll do our best to make it happen.

Thats why I also want a 600 battery. Guess it might sound dumb on paper, idk. Glp-1’s only get you so far, so if my bike can also shed a few pounds 😂.

This is why I was originally interested in the Levo 4…. Cascade linkage with 180 fork and then run it with just the extender. Then I rented one and shortly after Crestline enter the chat…. Game over lol

Ahhh, my Slik Graphics decals showed up today. Now I just need the wheels! Oh, and the frame 😂.
