The Amflow and a Rusty Chain (A Penguin Classic © for Cantankerous Old Men).

Was he shirty? I thought it was more passive aggresive which isn't much better really. But it's an unconvincing proposition to insist chains don't rust, clearly he didn't like being contradicted. Takes all sorts.

Same difference. 🤷‍♂️

Having not experienced a rusty chain sine the early 2000's, I am a little dissapointed with the one on my Amflow PL.
It has the SRAM GX which is new to me, as I have always run Shimano gourpset and chains in the past with never any rust issues. My boys vitus with a Deore groupset isnt rusty!

With a lot of chains to choose from since i last bought one, I am looking for recommendations for a non rusting Ebike / SRAM sutable 12 speed replacement.

Thanks
Look after your chain or it will rust, clean it ,dry it,wax it/squirt or my favourite smoove then rinse the mud off ,dry and repeat after each ride and it won't rust, if you leave it wet after a ride any chain will rust.

This is one of the most baffling threads i've read on a mtb forum in many years.
-All chains rust if you degrease them by washing and do not re-lube... no matter how expensive they are
-WD-40 is a water displacement product, and not a lube. It will help with the anti rusting situation, it is not a proper lube (unless you're using their bike chain lube, and then it is a lube, just not a good one)
-The efficacy of muc off products is an opinion, not a fact (although I would generally agree that their stuff is crap for the most pat)
-This thread has nothing to do with amflow, putting their name in the title is disruptive to their brand for seemingly no reason... same could really be said for sram on this one
-you cannot fix stupid
-water is wet, sky is blue (except maybe in the uk most of the time), clouds are worth yelling at
Water Displacement 40th modification (WD-40) made during WWII to displace water in rifles. Great for what it was made for, nothing else as this poster stated.

It wasn’t invented until 1953 according to the wd40 website, they did send packs to soldiers in Vietnam though, perhaps that’s where the WW2 thing comes from?

Anyway, if you look at the ingredients on the can, it is also a lubricant, albeit not a heavy duty or durable one.

Works for my post ride cleanups anyway, and none of my chains are rusty following a spray and wipe with it. I gave up on proper expensive chain lubes and waxes over a decade ago, I don’t seem to go through any more chains than before.

If they’re lucky they get a drizzle of ‘3 in 1’ oil as well! 😃

Before my dad passed away he told me in West Texas that Old farmers buy them up to spray on their hands due to Arthritis. I tried that in 2019 and it did work. It was temporary Haven’t had issues since then as I am retired and not working with hands a lot. Not telling anyone to do this. I was desperate and hurting badly and had to work with my hands so I tried it.

All true, and funny, yelling at clouds is something I do quite a lot of lately

Do I understand that you used WD40 to ease arthritis or similar on your hands? Sorry if I misunderstand but that's how it reads to me.

A common claim apparently…

Pah! There is Ballistol, since 1904 what is much better!😎 And family tested to heal wounds and smelly feet, Oma said! 🫣

Ballistol Universal Oil:
  • extremely creeping
  • lubricating
  • does not resinify
  • completely biodegradable
  • food-safe
  • skin-friendly
  • completely harmless
  • environmentally friendly
  • has a disinfectant effect
But I prefer Dr Wack S100 MultiOil for mechanical applications.

I read that WD-40 was indeed the 40th recipe for a water dispersant. It's the other stuff in the same article that is different.

The water dispersant was to get rid of the morning dew on rockets, especially those associated with the space program. The total weight of the dew was significant and affected the take-off weight of the rocket. Weight is why the main booster is no longer painted white. Someone worked out what the weight of the beautifying coat of white paint actually was! And how much more fuel was needed to boost that paint into orbit, and then how much more fuel to boost that extra fuel ..... and so on.

The final mystery ingredient that made it number 40 was pilchard oil. This may have led to some of the early rumors that it was good for spraying your fish-hooks and for aching joints. Current formulations do not contain pilchard oil.

But who the hell knows? I have been aware of the above for many years; after the internet, but before all the misinformation crap that blights the web these days, so maybe it's true?

I use wd40 as a penetrating oil for any mechanical fixing that needs some persuasion to release/undo......the only application I have used it for on my bikes is for removing pedals. Spray and leave for 20 minutes before attempting to unscrew them.
I mostly use it on outdoor padlocks, gate hinges, and on the blades of hedgecutters. In the latter scenario it prevents the blades getting gummed up with the juices in hedge foliage. The blades are lubricated in the slide channels with a decent oil however.

ffs, rust is the results of oxidation, usually happening when you have water reacting with iron and oxygen. to prevent it either ride only if it’s dry outside or apply a protecting layer of an oil product of your choice to prevent the direct contact of water on your chain.

This is revolutionary stuff here. Thanks for sharing.

Both of my children were conceived using WD40 as a lubricant.

Hmmm, can you think of any readily available products that will prevent this mysterious 'rust' from occurring .... something preferably in a handy sized can and spray-able? Asking for a friend.

Ooh ooh ooh, I know this one! You're talking about spray paint... Right?... Right?

I, oops...ermm, my friend tried spray paint on his chain, and apparently it works brilliantly until you needed to pedal, then it flakes off, and I found , sorry, he told me, it feels like the chain lacks any form of lubricant and is actually welded together for the first few hundred yards, then gets much easier as it's now all over the cassette, chainring and jockey wheels, and changing gears is a bit iffy. So I suggested he tries hairspray, deodorant, spray on car underseal, or even oven cleaner.
I just don't understand why no-one makes a water dispersion spray with lubrication properties that could help the mysterious 'rust' problem on bicycle chains

News flash!!!

He's just text me, he asked an online AI why his shiny chain gets rusty in wet weather, and the answer was something about seeking urgent help from a medical professional in mental disorders?

Has anyone bothered to check-in with the Amflow support team on this? I’d love to hear their thoughts.
They will not respond to a query from new found land dildo!

Had to follow the link as I could not believe there is a town with such name! Okay, okay, there is a Titi Lake in southern Germany similar to the Dildo Bay…….:ROFLMAO:
