So, the frame and motor are unchanged, but the battery is new. Is that good enough reason to buy a Canyon Torque:ON or Spectral:ON? Canyon answers this by pointing...

So, can these new batteries be used to replace the 900 on the previous version? are canyon going to give these new batteries to the owners of previous model? I love my 2018 spectralon an still ride it for training, but will only think of buying a new ebike when they start offering modular batteries. I mean, my old 504 are now like... 400, and can still give me 900 meters climb on trail mode. So, if a bike has TWO 400 instead of one 800, it would be a much more versatile bike, giving me the choice of running tha bike, like 2,5 kg lighter, when riding trail centers. And on long XC like rides, I could even carry an spare third batterie on a backpack, to get 1200 Ah!

Agreed, 2 x 400 batteries with either 1x400 or 2x400 mounted in the bike is the sweet spot for me.

pinkbike has those batteries at a way lower weight, which one is true now?

Now, Canyon has announced that it is relaunching the affected models with a new 800 Wh battery from Darfon - with a warranty period of two years. Though it has less capacity than the original 900 Wh battery, it is considerably lighter at just 3.25 kilograms. For context, the 800 Wh batteries from Bosch and Avinox weigh 3.9 and 3.7 kg, respectively.

I tried to ask directly, but that question wasn't answered. The 800 Wh battery has the same ammount of cells as the old 720, it's the same cell design. I guess the casing could be altered, but it obviously fits the same frame. The could be changes to mounts or the connector though, I guess someone will try soon. They still think the latest 720/900 batteries are safe. I guess this battery was made for the upcoming models.

I had this model canyon and sold it before the battery issue, it really is a great bike but i imagine owners will be mad they dont get the 800wh battery, even though they have been sent the revised 900wh. People are still reporting crackin even on the new 900wh. I imagine as the other guy said this is to clear stock and maybe reinvest in a avinox system for the spectral going forward.

So they send us previous owners a ‘new’ battery which is exactly the same as the previous failing one that still cracks and then they put a completely new battery in the leftover stock, pisstake. Especially for those like me that had the 720wh…
The replacement batteries are not the same as these new batteries?

In my opinion, they are selling off the remaining stock of bikes and motors, and only after that will they launch new products.

Regarding bikes and motors, I still believe that power is not everything, nor is it the same as reliability. I have already owned four models with Shimano motors, ridden many kilometers, and had zero problems.

I ride enduro with my Spectral:ON CF 8 and I am very satisfied. In the end, everything comes down to personal preference.

However, when it comes to price-to-quality ratio, no one beats Canyon. If it weren’t for the battery issues on these models, I believe almost everyone would be completely satisfied.

Yes torque on is a great bike but very heavy and the way the motor is set is really really prone to strike rocks and anything compared to some others. This is a serious flaw to me.

Can you share a link to these reports? I haven't seen anything about problems with the replacements.

Have a read on this thread, possibly the previous page also 🤷‍♂️

Rich.

They are working with Shimano on the new EP9 with a 12 speed internal gearbox.

Sources? I did not see anything related to that except a patent from mid last year. Also not sure that for Canyon it would be smart to go towards this market, for a cheap/affordable company bikes, as at the moment it is not as wide as classic ones - for the better and the worse.

Shimano is basically out of the EMTB market. Almost every (if not all) manufacturers have dropped Shimano from their EMTB line up. Anyone selling an EP8 (or whatever) in 2026 is not going to have a good year because the competition has left them in the dust. Shimano makes great products but when it comes to EMTB motors you must adapt and change quickly which Shimano never does. Their current management and business model is not well suited to competing in the EMTB motor market.

Canyon only have the shimano motor in the spectral . In the other emtbs they have they are using bosh .

I should say that every bike brand that are gonna put a shimano or bosh motor in their bikes 2026 are gonna be left in the dust beacase dji and their avinox motor is way a head.

We already see that many bike brands have changed in 2026 to dji.

I think it's pretty obvious Canyon would rather not have to try and shift a EP801 equipped bike n 2026 but they are forced to due to the amount of time they lost due to the battery issue. The alternative is scrapping a lot of stock. They have likely decided this is the least costly option.

Who knows what Shimano will bring in the future. Yes they are slow moving but they will likely bring something interesting at some point even if it means essentially sitting out for a year or two.

Let me fix that for ya...

every bike brand that are gonna put a shimano motor in their bikes 2026 are gonna be left in the dust beacase dji and their avinox motor is way a head in addition to Bosch being a very efficient, powerful, reliable and popular motor.

It is possible that a company as successful as Shimano and the potential that the Japanese have for quality and engineering will step up to the plate at some point but not likely anytime soon. With that being said Bosch could use a slim battery, but the "wild card" is the M2 Avonix and the upcoming new generation of Avinox powered bikes that could become a headache for legacy brands with brand x drivetrains that have bulky - motor / battery / frames.

The Bosch Gen 5 is a really good EMTB motor with a great network of support. So far everything I’ve seen from Avinox has been similar. Yes Avinox does not have the network Bosch has but I have seen them ship motors out to owners after providing the logs via the USB-C port which I think is pretty awesome. Yes, you have to change the motor yourself but two bolts and swapping sprocket/cranks works for many of us.

As far as I know Shimano never provided a motor/battery combination for the bike manufacturers so they were free to source their battery solution to optimize their frame design. Sounds great, until the company you chose produces a battery that fails, then they go dark on you and never provide a solution. I think this is the situation Canyon found themselves in and it has taken all this time to certify a new battery solution for their orphaned Shimano powered bikes.

I think once Canyon unloads as many legacy Shimano bikes as they can they will go in a new direction with their future full power EMTB’s. I would be very surprised to see Shimano as a player in the EMTB market because it is moving too fast.
