I am currently reviewing this thread. I can confirm that some service centers in Poland are modifying Gen 4 and Gen 5 software to a version adapted to the US market, i.e., with a speed limit of 32 km/h (I wonder if the nominal power is set to 250W or 500W?). What's more, they claim that it is possible to disable the speed limit. They also make changes to settings such as Powermore, lighting, power port activation, etc.
What's more, you can easily update the software if you want to install ABS or electronic derailleurs. The latter is tempting, although I recently ground my derailleur again with a piece of wood. While replacing it with Deore costs pennies, replacing it with a new electronic derailleur is not so cheap, so I think I'll stick with the cable...
Some do it only on site at the service center (you have to bring your ebike to the service center), while a few do it remotely. In the latter case, you need access to a computer running Windows 10 (why not 11 – I don't know...) connected to the bike controller via a USB-C cable. The service is performed remotely, although most likely on the service technician's account.
After changing the software, you can update it to newer versions as usual using Bosch Flow. All languages are available on the displays, including the one you have been using so far. Of course, there is no speed distortion as with chips, no errors, and the motor does not go into emergency mode even when riding at maximum assistance speed for a long time. There is no need to worry that a motor with the American version of the software settings will be blocked in the EU – just as bikes with EU motors will not automatically switch to higher parameters if they are used in the US, bikes in the US will not be restricted if their owner rides them in the EU.
Prices for the service start at PLN 700 to PLN 1000 (€164 - €234) - the price may not be low, but it is comparable to engine controller cheating chips. In addition, unlike chips, there is no risk of engine blockage or error.
Advertisements appear on OLX:

To clarify: no, these aren't my ads

– to be honest, I'm wondering myself whether to take advantage of the change. I wouldn't be so sure that Bosch won't put an end to this type of service sooner or later: by removing access for service technicians performing this type of service or by blocking the possibility of changing the software on US for service technicians from the EU, leaving it only for those who are actually based in countries where the speed limit is higher than 25 km/h.
