My friend has a 2021 Giant Trance X E+ 2 Pro 29”, and motor is stated to be:

  • Sync Drive HW Ver X0PB1 (in Cell APP)
  • Sync Drive Pro (in motor case)

Now motor is fried and he would like to buy a motor, and en ebay we can find new Yamaha PW-X2 and Yamaha PW-X3, but we are not sure which one is the Yamaha equivalent to the current motor and if the Giant battery and display will work hassle free with the new motor.

Can somebody tell us which Yamaha motor will be the one we should buy , even if we have to ask a Giant dealer to load the Giant FW in the new Yamaha Motor

You'd have to check the mounts are the same , but it would need to go to a Giant dealer to activate the hardware.
I don't see there would be an issue with matching up as i don't see giant going to the trouble of changing connectors for the motor

My fried motor is Giant and looks like it is a Yamaha PW-X2 hardware version X0PB1.

I found a new Yamaha PW-X2 but it is
hardware version X0P41.

And I do not know what the differences are, do anybody know?

It won't be compatible going by what I've found out . The Sync-driver motor in the giant has different soft and firm wear built it by giant .

You will have to replace with the same motor I'm afraid.
Is in not still in warranty?

I have a friend that had his 2020 Giant SyncDrive motor replaced by a Yamaha PW-X2. Job was done at a Giant dealer and they also loaded Giant FW, and new Yamaha motor has no issues.

Yamaha and Giant motors are the same dog with different collar, Giant motor is a Yamaha with customized FW, the issue may be to find the matching motor and find out if the different HW versions X0PB1 vs X0P41 could create issues.

Yes you may be able to swop the motor but it could workout to be and expensive mistake if it doesn't work properly.
What is the difference in price between the giant sync drive motor and PW X2 ?
And is it worth the risk ?

I believe that is a PW2, the PW3 only has 2 screws holding the left bearing cover on.
Yes, I noticed that, it is a PW2. But I have checked with a couple of Giant and and Yamaha bike mechanics and they told me that although Giant and Yamaha motors are basically the same, Giant has made it impossible to use a Yamaha motor in a Giant bike, there are several HW and SW incompatibilities that make it impossible to convert a Yamaha motor into a Giant motor just by reloading Giant FW.

I already opened the motor (18.000Km) and the problem is that the nylon gear has three broken teeth, but in eBay there was a brand new Yamaha PW-X2 for 516€ and my mate preferred the new motor. But as it is not possible to install the Yamaha motor, then I have bought a new nylon gear in eBike Motor Center and I will substitute it, and my friend will be a happy camper again.

This is the nylon gear with three missing teeth

Hi. Just resurrecting this thread. I have a problem with a sync drive motor on a 2022 giant talon e+ 29. Is there a guide on how to remove the motor anywhere so I can send it away for repair ?
