I have started building my own wheels and I want to experiment with differing rear hubs to see if there are alternatives to the mainstream hubs. I am currently running Kooser XM490.

They are a 6 pawl, 4 fully sealed bearing hub and have worked really well over the last 5 years I have used them. But since buying the Amflow PL Carbon Pro. I have been getting far more air, and jumping off higher and higher drops to flat. Clearly placing much more energy through my rear hub.

So to check the hub was performing ok. I removed my rear wheel and noticed the freehub was much more difficult to slide off the axle. I did manage to completely strip the hub of all bearing and inspected the hub. Everything looked ok, but once again, after reassembly, sliding the freehub back on the axle was not as easy as it should be. I can only surmise the axle is not perfectly straight. The hub is working perfectly after 500km. But I'm not happy with the way the freehub slides on and off.

So I have been searching for an alternative hub with a thicker axle and stumbled across the Tanke TH490. It also runs 4 fully sealed bearings and 6 pawls, but the pawls have 3 attachment points, giving it 120 clicks per rev. Much better than the Koozer.

I have bought one of these hubs and stripped it down. The axle is 2mm thicker, though this means the bearing inner diameter is bigger. The bearings are NBK out of Taiwan. But as the entire hub is only AUD$36. I have bought a spare hub, to give me a full set of spare bearing, spare freehub, springs and pawls.

I am going to build an entire new rear wheel. I have bought a 27.5 Raceface ARC30 rim. And I'll keep the Kooser XM490 hub and 27.5 DT Swiss Rim fully intact as a spare rear wheel. I also have the original Amflow 29er carbon wheel as a spare.

Because these hubs are only AUD$36. My plan is to just change all bearings, and entire freehub every 2 seasons. I guess I could just change the entire hub, and maybe I'll build another spare wheel and just do that every 2 seasons. But servicing the hub is so much quicker, than lacing an entire new wheel.

I'll report back on how the Tanke TH490 goes.

BTW. Yes I could just buy expensive brand name hubs. But that is not the point. The point is to find an easily and cheaply serviceable alternative, that is a fraction of the cost, but performs just as well. I have run the Hope Pro 4 previously. Great hubs, but expensive to buy and service.

BTW2 : My front wheel will remain a Kooser XM490 in Oil Spill colouring, as I have never had any issues with front hubs, and the Tanke TH490 rear hub is also in Oil Spill colouring as well.

If anyone has used less recognised hubs and had a good experience. Please post about them here.

Thanks. I'll buy one and pull it apart. (y)
He has a wheel build thread with some good info on it too.

Hi
I have also build wheels on straight pull 450 koozer hubs. So far so good. Easy to lace the wheels. Cheap freehub body in case of replacement. Quality is IMHO good for the price.
They are not the lightest hubs but are very strong.

Cheers.

New rear 27.5 Raceface rim has arrived. As I'm using the front Carbon 29er Amflow 28H rim. I'm now just waiting for :

Front 28H Kooser Oil Spill hub.
Rear 32H Tanke TH490 Oil Spill hub.
273mm SS J hook spokes.
293mm SS J hook spokes.
Gold Nipples.

Tracking has them arrived in Sydney.

This is the TH490 Tanke hub I got to strip and study. It will be used for spares on the new Oil Spill coloured hub. I got Black because it was about $5 cheaper than the Oil Spill colour, and I will only be using the internal parts.

I have also been trying different greases on the freehub. I normally run a very light grease. But I'm going to try a heavier bearing grease, and pack more in. The hub click is much quieter with the heavier and more plentiful grease. I just hope it doesn't fowl the pawls. But so far it seems to work really well.

How loud are they? Im after cheap strong silent hubs.
I would rather not have to rely on packing it with grease every 2 weeks to keep it silent.

Hi Astro66, I hope You are not eating a lot of doughnuts :D
From my experience for ebikes or riders on heavier side it is highly recommended to use ARC30 rim on the back (better, stronger material than AR30). AR30 should be OK as a front rim.

Regards

Thanks for the heads up. (y)

I agree the 6069 Alloy is about 10% -15% stronger than the 6061 Alloy. But there is 4% more alloy in the AR Rims. So there isn't much between them. Both are rated Enduro, and I'm fitting to a Trail/All Mountain bike and I'm about 85kgs. If I have any issues. I post about it.

They are 120 click. So not quiet. But instant pick up.

They have a really nice rubber seal, so I hoping the grease should last quite a while.

I've found Ratchet type tend to be quieter, than the pawl. But not as quick engaging.

The Kooser 350 come with ratchet and a Cr-Steel Axle. But only 40T.

If you want to spend a bit more. You can get the special edition Kooser 350. They have 60T ratchet and ceramic bearings. If they came in Oil Spill. I would have got them.

I'm looking for the least amount of engagement tbh, so the suspension can work as well as possible.
Currently riding e13 sidekick and they are both silent and have delayed engagement. It's the perfect hub for me, but I would definitely settle for something else if it has 18t and was silent, (very) strong and cheap.
Sidekicks are very overpriced, sadly.

Let us know how you like the hubs after a while please! :)

I'm the opposite. Technical Climbing you want the fastest engagement after stopping to avoid a pedal strike. I also find I have better timing with the Torque Sensor when you are trying to get that power stoke in to leap over or off something.

So the Tanke TH490 hub turned up, so did the spokes and nipples.

I built the wheel. Looks fantastic. One of my best builds. Working with a high quality rim really makes the build easy.

So I must say. The 120 clicks does make more noise than the existing 72 clicks. I will fit it and give it a run. But I might take @volts advice and try the 40T ratchet, in the Kooser 350. See what it goes like on the bike.

Sweet wheel! Now go have fun! :)

OK my experience with higher engagement hubs. The Bosch motor does not like them. I have Hope pro 5 and recently had to use my spare wheel (DT350), and only 54 PoE and the difference in the way the bike rides and sounds (Motor rattle) is night and day.
So I have bought the Hope Pro5 ebike freehub to go on instead at 54 PoE. (When my replacement rim arrives.)

OK. Went for the first ride with the new hub. It rides fantastic. But is way too noisy. I just couldn't get used it making so much noise when you coast.

I did lots of huck to flats on concrete, and road down some really long stairs, and I stripped the hub when I got home. The hub was in perfect order. So it's a great hub. But it's not for me.

So I'm going to look for another hub. I may get the Kooser 350, with the steel axle and 40T ratchet. But I just cannot find it in Oil Spill. And I just bought a new 28H Kooser front hub in Oil Spill, to lace up my Carbon Amflow 29er front wheel.

So I'll see what I can find.

Nobody should use high engagement hubs on full suspension emtb's. You just simple don't need one. And lower engagement hubs have less pedal kickback too.

Does look like a nice wheel!

What wheel building jig do you use, out of interest?

On my old Heckler it was really good, not so on the Orbea.

You say "Nobody". But I just rode this higher engagement hub. And it makes a significant improvement when doing those short power half strokes, over a hub that takes much longer to engage.

So for technical climbing, I want faster engagement to generate more power doing those short half pedal strokes, to prevent rock strikes, or to get the front wheel up quickly.

I bought this EMTB for it's climbing ability. Not descending. So I want to set it up to climb best.

I was just building them in a spare bike I had, originally. Just using cable ties tied to the frame to true it. But I found this unit and it is more comfortable.

Anyway. I've ordered the Koozer 350 with Cr-Mo Steel Axle and 40T Ratchet Freehub. Hopefully it will be quieter and not too much of a compromise on engagement. I'm just getting black, but I'll look at some Gold Decals for it.

I'm riding a bike that came with DT Swiss 370 ratchet hubs and I have to say they are SILENT. The tires on dirt make more noise than the hub. Hub sound is something I never noticed until its gone and I like the silence.

On another note, I have Hunt wheels on another bike that's a traditional paw style hub. I filled it up with some Lucas Red n Tacky and it was silent for a couple rides and now makes a little noise but not much. That may be something you can try with the newer hubs.

For that kind of use sounds reasonable.

I laced up the Amflow Carbon front wheel with the Koozer XM490 front hub, and took it for a test ride. No issues and looks a great wheel. Only AUD$26, plus $16 for the spokes and $3 for the gold nipples.

I've also added matching decals to the Raceface rear wheel, so when I fit the new Koozer 350 hub and re-install on the bike. The wheels will look more matching

Holy shit that thing is so bling.
I already crashed mine twice and have mismatching parts everywhere and green pedals lol

Kooser 350 hub turned up. Really nice looking hub. Very quiet. Looks like a winner. I'll build the rear wheel this week and give it a test.

Spares are reasonably priced. New ratchet about AUD$25. Bearings are a couple of dollars.

I also order a bearing installation/removal kit, as it was on special. I can do wheel, freehub, headset and suspension bearings with this kit.
