Thought I would share this. Today is the 50th anniversary of me getting my motorcycle licence. Never had an accident……a couple of near misses though.😳 Anyway. I sold my motorcycle. My daughters ordered me. Now I sedately ride my e-bike around. SAFELY! But they think I should give that up as well……..Me on public transport! Views please. I am in good physical health for my age…….what I mean is, I am still breathing……sort of.

Congratulations, I got my motorcycle licence at 16 so it is a few more than 50 years since then, couple of very minor accidents but nothing that put me in hospital thank goodness. Had to give up the motorcycle in my early 50s after a stroke left me somewhat lame on the left side, lost the fine control in my left hand so the clutch was near impossible and anyway here in Germany I would have needed to retake both car and motorcycle tests to keep my licence and to be honest it was probably a good thing. Got into e-bikes when regular cycling started to become hard work, it has greatly expanded my range but still keeps me fit, ok I don't do so much in winter though I do use a trekking e-bike round town if its not raining or snowing. Munich is blessed with cycle paths almost everywhere and generally is very very bike friendly (they have even set on road bike paking places (complete with metal stands to lock bikes to) which gets bikes off the pavements and is also a reminder to car drivers of the way things are going. I'm not sure I would want to ride in London these days though but I would say that it should be your call, since you already have the experience. Maybe look to plan some cycle tours out to the countryside and take your bike with you on public transport if you don't do so already.

Tell them not to worry and get on with their life's while you enjoy yours. 😂👍

I have only had my licence for almost 49 years. I have crashed a few times, but nothing serious.

I still have a few bikes, but only the enduro bike is ridden regularly. The road bikes are mostly in the garage.

But I have no plans of giving up riding, and noone has suggested it so far.

I really enjoy riding and racing enduro. We even have our own class called 60+

I'm among the slowest in the field but have great fun all the same

What they don't understand is your health would deteriorate far quicker, if you didn't get out and ride your ebike. So just convince them you are still riding for your health. That seems to keep the "Nervous Nellies" in my family quiet.

I also have had my motorcycle license for 41 years. I still ride an Electric Motorcycle to commute for work when needed, as I mostly work from home. Telling the family "I'm doing it for The Environment" seems to keep them quiet. But if I was involved in an accident, even a minor one. My family and girlfriend would make my life miserable if I didn't get rid of it. So I ride super carefully. I hate public transport.

I've had my bike licence for 43 years & have just done a lap of Kyrgyzstan.
However, my current situation due to a low speed drop............

Will you get mobility back in your ankle? Too soon for physio I suppose.

I need to get into the country side more. If I could I would move out of the city. I’ve seen that many bikers suffer through lack of experience. My first bike was a Yamaha FS1E….😂

@Electric Toenails Even when I was a young lad, I never lusted after a motorbike, not even a scooter (which was much more popular among the crowd I knew). But If I had got my licence, it would have been a lot more than 50 years ago. I do not ride my emtb sedately, although I do accept that sedate is a relative term. As @Astro66 said, my physical and mental health would deteriorate far quicker, if I didn't get out and ride my emtb. So tell your daughters to stop ordering you about, that you are not quite dead yet, and get out and give those trails a thrashing. You still have plenty of life yet to live! :)

And for heaven's sake, stop riding sedately! Get some lessons! They are nearly always beneficial. :)

Wow modern stuff! Mine was a BSA C11, 250CC (older than I was, but post war), no rear suspension and 3 speed box, donated from a friendly neighbour who could not get it working, though I learnt to ride in a field a couple of years earlier on a mates 175cc Villiers powered James, only British and Italian motorbikes in those days.

Me dad had a James (before I was born) and I passed my bike test at 17 on an 1978 Yamaha DT 100 back in '83 (42 years ago). My emtb would destroy it today off road, then again so would a pogo stick, a moon hopper and a pair of clackers but it looked cool 😄

I remember the clackers!😄 Just a thought, last winter I spent 5 days in hospital suffering the effects of hypothermia. I could not afford the heating. My daughters thought I went away on holiday! A friend told me to use my bus pass this year to stay warm on buses…….I worked for nearly 50 years for the national power grid.😂

Sorry to hear that, I can sypathise , is the national power grid one of those theiving bar*tard employers who refuse to increase pension payments on pre-97 contributions, I worked for a computer company that was taken over by Hewlet Packard and they have never increased my pension since they started paying it out, over 15 years ago, we were opted out of the national SERPS, cost more and the liars promised better payouts. I also never got the Winter Fuel allowance despite Germany being a qualification area.:cry:
