A New Superlative? Exclusive Insights Into the New Maxon AIR S Full Power Motor & Factory Visit
Formula 1, Mars mission & e-MTBs: We visited maxon and took a close look at the new AIR S full-power motor – including exclusive insights and a test ride.ebike-mtb.com
watching with hope as it looks like it might be a move in what I consuder the right direction ( enough power, enough battery, under 16kg xc emtb). , just a few questions as usual with a new motor (living up to the hype and marketing, reliability, post warranty maintainability and spares , UK dealer set up etc), let’s see
When next generation battery technologies finally arrive* with less than half the weight/at least twice the energy density, then the game will change. Until then will be only incremental improvements.Impressive tech for sure ! 2 kg with 90nm 600w was unthinkable till this.
However, looking at their batteries it seems we are still far from any advancements in this area with standard weight and size.
Yeah, thinking if/when solid state batteries are finally scalable for commercial use, and are less expensive than diamonds, then that will be the big break through on weight drop.Impressive tech for sure ! 2 kg with 90nm 600w was unthinkable till this.

Ouch $6k for the frameset only...like the 165mm travel but only the 400Wh option not both 600Wh too.I found this company from the Maxon page, they have a frameset with the new motor available for purchase. They claim a complete bike can be built under 15kg! Impressive for 90nm and 400wh.

Good question. But I gotta think they have the 600 Wh for a reason...90Nm can still drain faster than 40 Nm. Plus, heavier riders like myself will be carrying that 250Wh extender for sure on longer rides...but that's OK. I average 1.5-2 hrs or maybe 20 miles these days...It's curious though, they keep mentioning efficiency.
Does their 400watt last as long as the others 550 watts equivalent, for example?
Will be interesting to read the reviews.
Yeah...I think we'll see 600 Wh down tube options on some of the builds. It’s ridiculous that they are putting a 400 watt battery in a bike with 90 nm. Why not go 700+ and range extender option, that way you never get range anxiety
Oh wow! Good on you for asking! Can it be added later when the 600 is ready?I asked dirtlab about the 600wh pack. They said it's not available yet, so they developed around the 400.![]()
Can they do a review here? In our platform? I'd like to see a US bike company step up like Intense, Canfield or Salsa! This was their exact response.
"Currently, the Paratu CP E-Bike Frame Kit comes with a 400Wh battery and an optional 250Wh range extender. There is a plan at Maxon for a 600wh battery yet these plans are not set in motion yet."
Whoever I was messaging at bikelab was super friendly! Apparently they'll have the bike at an event in lake Tahoe in a few weeks.
It's a scam...if/when solid state batteries are finally scalable for commercial use, and are less expensive than diamonds
Ok...maybe. EMBN just showed some semi-solid state batteries in the same Day 2 vid. (It's at the 22 min). But I have well-versed engineer Emtb buddies that run the gamet of 100,% agreement with you to a younger one wno's a PhD and chemical engineer at Intel saying maybe 5 yrs and not cheap, even with China, who's likely first to make commercially scalable.
Not the batteries, the price of shiny pebbles...Ok...maybe.
So you're saying yes solid state will be available and scalable commercially, but it will be monopolized by battery manufacturers to such an extent, they'll be overvalued on the market as to not realistically be available to average Joes? Not the batteries, the price of shiny pebbles...
Yeah, there's proof of concept. We'll know performance characteristics and durability short term by Fall. But also, they need that 600 Wh battery option for bigger travel Enduro rigs. That's still in development as Kaylee discovered last week.FYI - eMTBs with the New Maxon AIR S Motor – The Sexiest Full-Power eMTBs?
for me, the Thömus sounds like a nearly perfect bike (but main battery not removable), however no UK dealers or presence (happy to be wrong, so bike spares issue and warranty etc imho, remember Brexit - yayyyyy) and having been an unsuccessful early adopter before I will wait a bit for real world motor feedback - so that’s a way down the road If atall.
back to awaiting tq hpr60 experiences and hearing how people who update a hpr50 trek exe get on and is the extra power noticeable.
