Quick run up to the Grampians(Victoria, Australia) to check it out after being ravaged by bushfires over Christmas burning over 76,000 hectares. Most of the track we use to ride are all closed maybe never to reopen as the National Parks services hate the peasantry sullying their(now not so) pristine bush.
Amazing how quickly the Australian bush regenerates after fires, shoots sprout from the trunks & branches from seemingly bunt trees.

Hopefully they have the intelligence to realise that those very tracks bring a lot of money into the region in terms of the " tourist dollar "
Best wishes that this is so..and trails are reinstated 🤞🏻

Having decided that his broken left wing ( rotator cuff) was too damaged to ride anything too " serious " ..and that he would do nothing more than a pootle up the coast from his door this weekend ..it came as a bit of a surprise when Wayne contacted me yesterday evening to see if I fancied a ride out of Rothbury ...
This was meant to be a gentle ride around the carriage drive and some double track in the Simonside Hills ..but it turned into an exploratory adventure with a fair amount of rough stuff...on tracks that neither of us had ever ridden and a " cave " to explore .
I guess you can't keep a good man down but I had to reign him
in a little bit towards the end..( didnt want his missus putting a contract out on me if he damaged himself again ) 😁.
Some pics of mainly the " new " bits we had never been on in the near three decades of riding in these hills ..mine first followed by Wayne's which have just dropped into my inbox while writing this....

Great ride with food for thought as to how to link the new stuff into our " normal " route ..
Hope the shoulder is bearing up OK Wayne ..and cheers for the pint in the Turks Head 👍🏻
That third pic of the cave looks as though it had been made by adding stones of various shapes to a natural opening. It looks like it was a drain from somewhere.

It's all natural Steve ..there has been no " industrial " activity in these hills ..just rocks, rocks & more rocks ..
Simonside Hills Google Search

Government department, so intelligence is spread rather thinly.

Hikers are very much restricted to certain tracks & campsites, 4wd & trail bikes are actively discouraged with gates & trees across many tracks, fire tracks neglected(I attended the above fire as a volunteer firefighter as did hundreds of others over many weeks this fire raged, a lot of the fire front we couldn't access due to overgrown tracks)rock climbing has been forbidden in certain areas of "cultural significance", at over 1,600 sq kms you would think there is room for all.
There is only 1 small village in the north - Halls Gap which would benefit massively from a dedicated mountain bike park, especially over winter when there is less tourists.

Government seems to be deaf to this only spending in metropolitan areas.

First ride on new bike, have forgot how smooth the Specialized motor is. LBS set the suspension according to my weight, was pretty good, didn’t even bother check the sag. Got this yesterday, installed 10-speed linkglide and set the tires tubeless. Thought first to put Alberts but these are T9/T7 and rear is gravity casing so all good. Didn’t cut the bars because thought to change it anyway so felt little weird to ride 800mm instead of 780mm. Brakes are ok, pathetic reach adjustment but after first ride no reason to change these, at least for now. Remembered why I haven’t ridden without front muguard for years 😀 These are now so cheap so had to buy spare bike for bullit 😀

A great ride out my friend. The shoulder is fine if I don’t move it 😆 or try to open gates……It’s great to find new local stuff to ride after riding the Simonside Hills for 25+ years.
It’s got a week to recover and you’ll probably get an another call to ride.
Nice write up.
Rotator cuff is bad news. I had that and it took ages to get right. Still not got all the movement that I had before. Had physio and one of those stretchy bands and exercises that you have to force yourself to do every day. Good luck.

I'm just waiting on a second consultant appointment to discuss my rotator cuff surgery. :-(

Had to Google Rotator cuff . I don't know the anatomy parts until me or someone else suffers from it. Quite the expert on colonoscopy procedure if anyone wanted to know 😬 . Get well soon .

Bangor, N Ireland yesterday

A nasty whiplash injury, cracked frame and torn knee ligament has meant many weeks without riding.

I managed a 20 mile pootle around my local trails yesterday and managed pretty well . Fitness wasnt too bad and Im not particularly sore today but most importantly just getting back on the bike and into the woods made me feel good. It’s amazing how important riding is for body and mind. Well, mine anyway.

You on a diet pal ????. You were noticed by your absence. Yes we take it all for granted not sure how I would cope if immobile for a long time.

I’ve an Ultrasound app on Friday after an online/telephone consultation. Then a face to face back end of July to discuss results. From the X-rays Ive recently had there is significant joint deterioration due to arthritis which I’ve been aware off for a good while so @Tonybro it’s a case now of waiting to find out what’s what……I love getting old me 😆

We're all doing not too bad I think . A lot of us in this forum are in our winter years 🤔 . Worst scenario we can always ease off on the black and red trails and still have a great day out. You don't have to look far these days to see folk hobbling about at all ages. Dare I tell I am heading to Tarland tomorrow.

Had several 'interesting' prostate examinations resulting in a radical prostatectomy in 2006, a rotator cuff repair, acromio-clavicular separation repair, calcific tendonitis (aka frozen shoulder), and recently a particularly unpleasant colonoscopy. Plus a selection of more minor stuff like a ganglion repair, blepharoplasty, fubar'ed left ACL, yeah no fun getting old.

Thats a big ive got a Blacker cat than you story. Be googling all afternoon with that lot.

Thank eff I've not had a colonoscopy, a few endoscopies though, one involved them taking 24 samples all the way down to my stomach. Could feel each tug as they took sample. Very uncomfortable, intrusive, Linda Lovelace I am not.
Anyway back to this, The Picolax Thread from Singletrack World, it never gets old.

C’mon, no need to Google anything. There’s enough experience and advice on this site for a complete head-to-toe.…at least that’s what I do.🤞👊🏻

Wish I lived a bit closer Colin as I would have joined you……I want to go back next year to do it justice 🤞🤞
