Just received this email from Spesh, saying that due to an app update I need to be connected to the internet next time I connect to the bike. What's that all about then?

So that it can download the update.

If it's not connected, it wouldn't know there's an update and you can carry on as you are.

Don't know what the hidden updates is but noticed now the tuning racing - universal - battery friendly has been moved around, before, they were in reverse order

Maybe unrelated to the OP's issue, but I rode my 2020 Levo yesterday and the app seemed to work correctly, showed some updates, logged the ride. Today I am trying to look at the updates and it appears that I have a partial connection, that is I can start the ride logging, pause and stop it. However when I try to open 'bike settings' it tells me to connect the bike. Nothing that I can find will initiate a connection attempt.
Deleted the app and re-installed, no change. Have wifi, BT and cell connection available.
Anybody any clues please?

Disregard my last. Removing then adding the bike seems to have restored the connection. I also hadn't noticed that the app had been emasculated and the tuning options were no longer available, so without that and OTA updates its really quite useless anyway.

Anyone else have trouble with "auto unlock" since this? I did notice that my "motor odometer" was brought up to date. It had previously been stuff for months. It's now only about 100 miles different than the number of miles shown under "activities" on the home page.

I bought the bike (Gen 3) in December of 2024. Upon registering, I was invited to participate in a pilot for next app version. But they rightly asked for a commitment of several rides a week and the ability to participate actively in review/reports etc. A commitment I could not make at the time. I wonder if that version will see the light of day at release of the Gen 4.

Yeah I’ve been having trouble with the auto lock too. I turn it off so it wouldn’t activate whilst in the van driving but can’t get set to auto and have to lock the bike manually with the app

Not sure I'll do this.... Specialized have been going backwards with the app, and scared they going to remove even more features to force a new purchase.

Will wait a little longer till there are a few more reviews on the changes and what has been taken away

Irony ON:

Maybe they try to do with Specialized App the same as with MC:
"stay connected that we can rip it off over OTA. Then there will come a brand new Gen 4 App with possible new (the same) features in the remote future. The compatibility with previosus Gen bikes may not be guaranteed, but you can always aquire a compatible bike to the new Gen 4 App"

irony OFF

New update today

I’ve been on the beta and there’s nothing nefarious going on. They’re good people trying to make the app a better experience.
It’s riders from mostly the US and UK. We’ve been able to have a positive influence on making the app better.
Due to snow in my area I haven’t been able to test lately so don’t know specifically what’s come out on this release.

As a beta tester, can you drop it a request to add jump stats back to the app. Bought my GEN 3 Levo when Mission Control had been discontinued and it’s a feature I always wanted to try :(

I’m pretty sure that’s been requested.
That’s what I use my Garmin for.
Riders also want maintenance cues and other things that are better done in other apps like ProBikeGarage where you can add all your bikes. I hate when apps get bloated, it just causes more issues.

No OTA updates is a disgrace! What is this? 2005? Specialized better get their shit together fast!
I thought there hasn’t been any updates for a number of years, so whether the app does it or not is inconsequential

That sucks big time as I bought my bike at a dealer that went almost bankrupt a few weeks ago and is several hours away from me. I hope the dealer closer to mr where I bought a battery will do this without charging me much money.

Its crazy: its 2025 and specialized scams its customers to pay for driving to their dealer and paying them for a software update that could be made via Bluetooth in 2 minutes if they wanted.

If they keep this up my next bike won't be a specialized.

I understand you are angry but you bought the bike at a dealer far away and he "almost" went bankrupt then is he bankrupt or not because I have never heard of anyone who "almost" go bankrupt and then you intend to contact another store that you have not yet done and you already blame Specialized even though you have not contacted the other dealer why can't the "almost" bankrupt dealer fix your problem or the dealer you haven't contacted?

Because I bought a bike thinking OTA updates are a given and after I bought it I had to discover that they replaced their working app with a barely working beta that misses many features of the old app.

The Levo just made it barely against buying another Bosch bike and one of the reasons I thought it would be better would be the OTA updates. Turns out right when I switched Bosch introduced OTA updates and Specialized removed them.

And most likely the dealer will charge for the Update plus I will have to drive there which will cost me time and money. So fuck specialized!

Sounds sensible to take the grief in advance, but a bit self-inflicted when you are unable to understand what you are buying now in today's technological development and what it entails.
Love Specialized💋

Listen specialized fanboy/girl: Specialized sure doesn't love you. This is a very one sided relationship. They only love your money. And if you also love driving to your dealer to pay them doing a software update that you could technically do yourself with your phone in under 5 minutes you are free to do so. But if Specialized quietly moves away from OTA updates while offering them for years its a them problem, not a me problem. They lied to me multiple times that they would add all the functionality of the old app to the new one.

Unless the a motor or TCU update was to add functionality (ie an Auto/EMTB mode) then if the bike is working I can’t see point of updates.

The Levo Gen 3 is almost 4 years old in its twilight years so if it’s not broken don’t fix it, sometimes updates will cause more problems and specialized will be consenting on the Gen 4 going forward.

I know. That's one reason I didn't think much about updates. My shimano e8000 didn't recieve meaningful updates for years after its end of production. They only added measures to restrict tweaking it with third party apps. But at least they didn't kill OTA updates. And with the well known Specialized/Brose reliability problem that got partially solved via a software update it would be important for me to have this feature.

It's not about fanboy but how you whining about problems you haven't even tried to solve since one shop is "almost" bankrupt and the other is too far away but I'm sure your problem is solved if you whine as loud as you can out your toilet windows.
Stay strong you're doing well.

I would not judge a bike just by software/app features. For me it's important how the bike feels when you ride on it. I might hate or love Specialized (company), it won't change their product. What is the accepted truth about Levo ? :)

Almost all bigger players (companies) are driven purely by profit these days. While I agree with electricbogaloo, the new application is many steps backwards from old version of MC(it just looks modern...with lack of functionality/information), bike itself has improved over generations. But even gen1 Levo is still a fun bike to ride, provided you update it with newer components. As for motor design, it hasn't change much since 2015. To sumarize, improved belt, different housing, different software, some other minor revisions. Latest belt from latest Brose motor will also work on first generation released back in 2015. The same applies for torque sensor, clutches, axle bearing, axle shaft itself. Motor electronics is a bit different but uses the same processor. And to this day, I've never tried an ebike motor that felt better than Brose.

I've serviced all kinds of ebike motors including Brose, Bosch, Shimano, Bafang. All have their ups and downs. What matters is that the users should also be informed about how all this works and that with proper maintance you can avoid general failure. You say you love your bike? Prove it. Let this be a 2 way thing. Give it(her) what (she)it needs, when it(she) needs it.

That being said, I have no love for Specialized, Bosch, Shimano or others, also no hate. But I can say I love the Specialized/Brose marriage...hope it lasts. Speaking of which....

I wish you a happy one...while it lasts :)
