Mid-ride and I get a 049C error - Torque sensor
After struggling for 10 miles pedaling against the motor to get back to the Jeep, I bring it to my LBS and after plugging it in to their diagnostic tool, they tell me the motor needs to be replace. Fortunately, I have a few months left on the warranty, but what really disappoints me is that I only have 350 miles on the bike (I also have a full-powered Levo - which I just replaced that motor) and I'm wondering if I'm just unlucky, or if I should sell the Trek after the new motor is installed?

Bummer! Most folks (64% of those responding to the poll below) haven’t had issues, but 7% had problems early on like you

Thanks for the link - I hadn't come across that poll.
Love the bike and the quiet TQ motor, but I'm wondering if I'm going to worry about another failure with the replacement motor, or if they have done some improvements/modifications in the past couple years.

I bought my bike in mid 2022,just after they were released, so I'm guessing it had one of the early motors. My first motor failed after 400 miles /4 months. It was replaced under warranty, and the new motor lasted for 2 years/1500 miles, it has just failed again and has been replaced again.

There's obviously no guarantees your new motor will last longer than the first, but I would guess it will.

I've owned my EXe 2.5 years and had a motor fail at around 20 months. Also had a remote fail. Both were promptly replaced under warranty by the local Trek store with no charge for labor- even though I bought the bike elsewhere. Not sure how many miles were on at time of failure, but I ride a lot in season- generally kill the battery 2x a week.

Between my partner and I we've also had Bosch SX, Shimano E8000 and specialized/brose motors. Overall the TQ has been my favorite so far. If you are happy with the range and assist level, I'd say stick with it!

get in touch with tq motors and send them the service report, they will send new motor out free if charge

Thanks. I brought it to my LBS back on 2/15 and the motor will be replaced under warranty, however the motors are on back order, so it may be a few weeks.

glad you are getting it sorted, my currently just short of 3k mileage and no issues as of yet, love the bike.

Thanks. I too like the bike - its a nice complement to the full-power heavy Levo I ride as well, but I was rather disappointed that the Trek TQ only had 350 miles on it before failure. I'd be grateful to have 3,000 miles as you have!

I would get in touch with tq motors direct and ask what could of gone wrong, they are good at replying and fully help 100%, never had any negative from them, create yourself an account like I did and you can get all the necessary information you need

Not sure he much to pay at LBS for service, but I purchased my own dongle and do all my own services and updates, my LBS wanted £30 each time, so paid £99 and got my own dongle, created a account on tq portal and get access to update tool. save you money in long run

Bad news from here in USA. My spragg is in the process of failing. Brought to an authorized trek dealer in Sedona. All electronics pass inspection. But the spragg failure apparently is the common failure point. Bought it sept 2023 and was in the trek dealer in sac to make sure it wasn’t the pawls of the rear hub which it was not. Brought it out here for 10/15 month long riding vacation. So the Sedona trek dealer tested it and trek will not extend the warrenty past 2 years. But offer a 20% discount on a new motor it’s $950 plus tax and labor. That’s for the 60 nm new motor

1500 miles on the bike. Never pressure washed or abused.

I’ll hold onto the original motor and eventually ( by the time the 2 yr warrenty expires ) somebody in USA should be able to repair the failed spragg.

Regardless 1500 miles is insufficient for a e bike motor.

my motor on EXE 9.5 is now over 4k miles and still going strong, every now and then I get a little clicking sound but I believe that's down to me with not put the cadence in, got bike 2 years in January and surprised motor is still given full power, use it every day and ride 12 miles a day to and from work. still say its the best decision I made
