E7000 / E8000 motor price for new

I've currently got a Kona Remote which wasn't the best spec on purchase (has been slightly upgraded) but does what I need and it's around 18 months old. It's had the motor replaced earlier last year on 450 miles under warranty and I was always planning on selling it on when out of warranty.

I've seen second hand motors and new ones in Europe for sale (and a couple of companies actuslly trying to repair and service them now), but has anyone had to buy one of these recently from a Shimano service centre and what was the cost (presumably you had to pay the service centre for fitting too).

Just beginning to think selling on is a bit of a hassle and maybe getting a spare battery and pricing up a motor may buy me a few years before replacing.

Do you need the motor repaired or are you just thinking of buying a spare?

I was told there was a very good chance Shimano would just take care of the e8000 replacement for free (maybe a small labour fee from the shop) even into the 3rd or 4th year of ownership.

This didn't pan out for me when mine went at 4 years and 10,000km, and I paid around 1000e for a new one. But this was in early 2022.
 
I'm kinda thinking of getting a spare or just the cost should mine pack up again. My first motor packed up after 450 miles from July 23 to Feb 24, which was particularly wet in the UK.

My second motor has done slightly more than that now, but apart from recent weather and a spell in the lakes during August where there was a lot of standing water hasn't really had to face large amounts of water so far.

I have read about e7000 owners that had them replaced just out of warranty or at reduced prices, so given there should be a warranty with that I've discounted buying one off eBay from Europe as I'd imagine warranty with one of those would possibly be awkward.

Also the fact that it's a E7000 worries me - like how long will they have stock of them. I appreciate a E8000 can be fitted but I think various wires have to be changed or spliced.

If I could stockpile an E7000 or two I would 😀
 
There is many options going forward as an EP800 will also fit with a few extras so if you enjoy the bike and want to keep it then there is a way forward in the future.
Prices vary depending on model but E8000 was £919Rrp but the motors you see on eBay or Europe are OE ones and won’t be programmed and shimano uk won’t program them due to them not supplying them.

As for repairs the common issue with E7000 is the plastic gear but the guys over at www.E-MotorRepairs.co.uk have remade these and can repair them or assist with a new one.

I've heard a few mention ep8's and such given they're the same mounting holes (IIRC) and one or two people have suggested which various displays etc are compatible with each motor. I just haven't seen anyone who has gone from say E7000 to Ep6 / Ep8, possibly I've just not looked enough. Certainly something I'm interested in.
 
Interesting talk about investing in old tech …. I have owned 2 e-mtbs … a hard tail with Bosch Gen2 performance line motor and an e8000 with 11000 kms on it …. the only e-mtbs I have ridden …I am still amazed by e8000 and want to keep that bike going so definitely would consider rebuild/replace the e8000 as everything about the bike is dialled. At 69yo I don’t need the lastest tech I just need good old reliable fun …. Have just purchased a 27.5” fox 36 factory eoptimised for $A600 NEW! Not the latest tech but who cares! I guess it depends on what’s important to you🤔
 
I guess that's my reasoning also. I have a 2022 Kona Remote with the E7000 and 60nm of torque, which i run in trail nearly all the time so that's apparently 50nm. I also run a Lapierre XRM XC bike and have a gravel bike. The 50nm is great for me and having never experienced more I don't currently need it.

At 50 with a dodgy knee I can still do the hills and distance but the emtb helps stop my knee flaring up and helps with rides around the peaks and lakes and some local stuff. If I were to buy a new ebike it would be bottom end of the market 3k to 4k, likely something reduced.

So many of the parts on the Kona - Sram Guide RE brakes, WTB wheels Fox 36 rhythm forks (upgrade), Shimano linkglide geartrain (upgraded), upgraded the rear rockshox deluxe shock with a megneg etc would either be replicated or at a similar level.

It's probably more cost effective then to keep the Kona going for a few more years even if that means I have to buy a new motor and battery at some point, even if that is 'old tech'.
