Hi everyone, one thing i really like about the pictures posted in this tread is it allows me to see sceneries of where people live and play, places I’m very unlikely to ever visit unfortunately. It always amazes me to see some of the places people go to and how spectacularly and remote some of them are. I like remote places!
I wanna share a few pictures from a ride i did thursday, they will show what the scenery looks like in my neighborhood. I should say that i live in Calgary, Canada. We’re located about 60 km east of the Rocky Mountains. The first picture was taken at tree line (2100m) looking east. On the horizon are the very flat canadian prairies, the next mountain range is over 2800 km in Quebec.

Next one is looking west with my bike cooling off after the long climb, in the distance you can see the snow on the Rockies proper. The one with the flowers (I’m a hippie child!) shows my destination the fire lookout on the peak to the left.

And finally a picture of who we often encounter in these woods. We don’t hear of many bad interactions with these guys, they mostly demand respect and I’m told they don’t really appreciate getting a bike wheel up their ass. That’s when things get nasty. That is why if you look at my handle bars there is a can of bear spray at the ready.
Cheers

Ooooo! You got some altitude. I’m just on the other side of those mountains.
Do all your bears wear one earring?😉

Seen tracks on the beach at Cullen, it could be you. Went up Binhill after that seen two ebikes there . Not many of us about this area
May have been !!
I hardly see anyone out most days just the occasional e biker at weekends or when I head down to the Cairngorms. Went out to the forests above pluscarden yesterday to ride some homemade trails I'd heard about..... Seriously steep ones and v v slippy in the wet..... Fun but I'm getting a bit old for drops that severe!! Knees were feeling it on today's ride.

The have names too, one is called Split Lips, another one it The Boss. Interestingly, The Boss lives around Banff and is knowing to have attacked and eaten black bears!

This guy was wandering around this area for a few weeks. Finally got a video of him. When he stood up for a back scratch he was over 6’ tall (maybe 6 1/2’). A younger teenage bear had been following him around, probably for protection.

A week later, in the same area, riding down a trail, the teenage bear was suddenly on the trail in front of me (15-20’ away). I quickly yelled at him …”Hey”…”Hey”. But he couldn’t see me right in front of him. I yelled again “Hey”…”Hey”.

Now I saw why he was confused. There was dried blood around his head, one ear was gone and his eye was on his cheek. The big guy must of gave him a sh*t kicking.

He spun around and ran away from me. I don’t think he made it for very long.

Scary! Your heart must have skipped a beat, they are so impressive… and big…

I see you’re on the Wet coast, have a listen of this podcast. It is the story of some guy from Quadra island who met a grizzly while riding. Listen preferably on a moonless night while camping.

I will.
We’re only guests in their home. We see them on a regular basis on the trails. (My backyard and on garbage day). You definitely move for the big-guys. They’ll just keep walking towards you …so you better move.👍🏻

There’s a few really big guys (Grandpa bears) on this mountain. They couldn’t care less about you. The teenagers are sketchy and scared at the same time. Mama with cubs…leave the area. Had a couple of fake charges from Mama with cubs.

Just listened to the podcast. Wow!🤯

Only been to Quadra island a few times but drove past thousands of times. I’ve got a few stories of close encounters with wildlife …but nothing like that.

I’m thinking of carrying a knife with me now.

A guy in Gold River (or Zebalis) was taken off his horse by a cougar. He had to fight for his life. He killed the cougar with his knife.

You can tell from his voice that it still scares him just retelling his story.

A big knife!

Cougars are also a concern around here. I encountered one only once winter riding, he crossed in front of me, made me pause for a second.

My little knife probably won’t do.

Cougar alert in our neighborhood a few years ago. Took a few small dogs. Kids had to be escorted to school.

Cougar ran between my legs once. Kinda funny now. New area for Falling, my partner wandered off to his section/face. I was checking out the lean on my first tree to be felled (8’ cedar) when a cougar scrambled out of the root system and between my legs. All I saw was fur…and then its tail as it ran away.

Mushroom picking with a friend one day. We separated on either side of a large mound for a few minutes …then I saw something flicking in the knee-high shalalh. (Spelling?) with my eyes I followed an outline to a set of eyes. The cougar was stocking me. Maybe 20’ away by this time. I raised the mushroom bags above my head and yelled to my friend not to let her dog come towards me.

The cougar sliddered away in seconds.

Different world at your end, as I know. Here you can stop anywhere to p.. and do not have to be concerned of bears, puma, snake or alligators in the bushes. Well, sometimes we have stupid people taking out and loosing their cayman or a snapper turtle in a public swimming lake.

On the other site you still have a chance when biting back:
