Lightweight (16.4kg) carbon trail eMTB; Bosch Performance Line SX (55Nm/600W) with 400Wh internal + 250Wh range extender

The Whyte ELyte 140 Works 2024 is the British brand's carbon SL XC/trail flagship and the lightest expression of the ELyte platform. Headline numbers: 140mm fork, 135mm rear, Bosch Performance Line SX at 55Nm and 600W peak from a 2.0kg motor, a 400Wh battery, 65.6 degree head angle and 485mm reach in the lone size L. Priced at GBP 10,999 for the Works trim. The ELyte platform has built one of the strongest UK eMTB followings of recent years: @Endorium praises the bike for "keeping the battery and weight low, which makes a massive difference to handling".
Drive system and range. The Bosch Performance Line SX is the lightweight half of Bosch's eMTB range: 55Nm of torque, 600W peak and 2.0kg motor mass. The 400Wh battery sits low in the downtube above the bottom bracket: @zizajaun notes Whyte rotates the motor to allow the battery to drop as far as possible, giving a lower centre of gravity than standard 600/800Wh Bosch installations. A Bosch 250Wh range extender lifts the package to 650Wh effective: @Endorium reports 26 miles and 5,000ft of climbing in Eco at 100kg rider weight with max 50Nm/350W settings. Bosch's Flow app, Kiox display and OTA firmware come standard.
Geometry and handling. 65.6 degrees up front is on the steep side of trail eMTB norms: a deliberate XC-leaning brief versus the slacker ELyte 150. Reach is 485mm, chainstay 450mm and wheelbase 1269mm in the only listed size L. Single-size production for the Works trim reflects Whyte's hand-built approach for the flagship; broader ELyte 140 trims offer wider sizing.
Build and value. One trim at GBP 10,999. The Works is Whyte's flagship build: Fox 34 or 36 Factory suspension, SRAM XX AXS Transmission, top-tier carbon wheelset and a fully-loaded finishing kit. The frame is shared with the SX-spec ELyte and ELyte EVO (Bosch CX-spec), proving the chassis flexibility. @Mteam notes the EVO RS v2 demonstrates CX motor compatibility with the 400Wh battery despite Bosch's official stance.
Community-verified strengths.
- Low centre of gravity. @zizajaun documents Whyte's rotated motor and downtube-low battery layout, a tangible handling advantage.
- Range with discipline. @Endorium's 26 miles + 5,000ft on 400Wh + extender at 100kg in Eco at 50Nm/350W settings demonstrates the SX's flexibility.
- Handling. @Endorium calls the low battery/weight a "massive difference" to handling.
- Display upgrade path. @RichMorr confirms the ELyte frame has space for the new Bosch Kiox 400C display.
Caveats and known gripes.
- Range vs full-power rivals. @andyjayh compares Forbidden e-Druid (Avinox) at 23 miles/5,500ft vs ELyte at 18 miles/4,000ft on similar rides in Auto mode: meaningful gap when Auto modes are used.
- One size only. The Works trim ships in L (485mm reach) only.
- No CX upgrade path for used SX bikes. @zizajaun confirms Whyte does not permit CX motor upgrade on used SX-equipped bikes despite the frame being identical.
- 55Nm is light for 140/135mm travel. Most XC/trail riders will accept this, but it sits below the Trek Fuel EXe (60Nm HPR60) and any 85Nm-plus rival.
- Premium pricing. GBP 10,999 puts the Works in flagship Specialized Levo SL S-Works and Trek Fuel+ MX X0 AXS territory.
- 400Wh is the only battery option. 600 to 800Wh is not available on the SX-spec ELyte 140 Works; range extender is essential for big days.
Verdict. The 2024 ELyte 140 Works is one of the most polished British-built SL XC/trail eMTBs on sale, with Bosch SX power, a rotated-motor low-COG 400Wh layout, modern XC-trail geometry and the Works trim's flagship-grade finishing kit. It suits riders who fit L, who value low centre of gravity and quick-handling SL trail use, and who are happy with 55Nm and the SX cadence character. Buyers chasing wider sizing, full-power torque, removable larger batteries or value-for-money should look at the ELyte EVO (CX motor), Specialized Levo SL or Trek Fuel+ MX. Production status: current.
