EMTB Forums verdict

The 2022 Giant Fathom E+ is the brand's trail-focused hardtail eMTB, built around an ALUXX aluminium frame, 29-inch wheels and a Giant SyncDrive motor co-developed with Yamaha. The UK lineup ran to two trims: the E+ 2 at £2,999 and the E+ 2 Pro at £3,499. It is now discontinued.

The E+ 2 pairs a 70Nm SyncDrive Sport motor with the integrated 500Wh EnergyPak Smart battery, a 120mm SR Suntour XCR 32 coil fork, Shimano Deore 1x10 gearing, Tektro HD-M280 brakes on 180mm rotors and Maxxis Rekon 2.4in tyres. Geometry is fairly conservative at a 68-degree head angle and 73-degree effective seat angle across S to XXL.

The E+ 2 Pro steps up to a 625Wh battery, an 80Nm SyncDrive Pro motor with 360 percent tunable power, a 130mm SR Suntour XCR 34 air fork, a Shimano Deore LinkGlide drivetrain and grippier Maxxis Minion DHF / Aggressor 2.5in tyres. The taller fork slackens the head angle to 66 degrees and steepens the effective seat angle to 76 degrees, giving noticeably longer reach numbers across S to XL on the same frame.

Both trims use a Boost rear end, Giant Connect TR 780mm bars and a fixed (non-dropper) seatpost as standard. As a hardtail there is no rear suspension. Range and ride feel will depend heavily on rider weight, terrain and conditions.

What the numbers mean on the trail

Computed from this bike's geometry, spec and build kit — reach, wheelbase, chainstay, head and seat angles, travel, motor, weight and the fork/tyre/brake spec — and worked out per size, because a fixed chainstay can make an S and an XL feel very different.

Size
Setting
Descending
48

A solid all-round descender (68° head angle, 120mm) — capable in the rough and steep without being an all-out bruiser.

Playfulness
57

A fair bit of pop, but happiest on flowing trail rather than trials moves.

Size balance
40

Rear-long with a planted front in L (FC:RC 1.51) — easy to weight the front and quick to turn, though it can feel light at the back at real speed.

Technical climbing
68

Climbs well — a 73° seat keeps the front planted. 250W of peak power and 70Nm of torque.

Best suited toAll-round trail riding across mixed terrain.

No single standout trait — a balanced, versatile bike.

Watch out forNo major red flags in the L geometry.

The numbers are well balanced for its category.
