Hardtail eMTB with Giant SyncDrive Pro 2 motor (85Nm)

The Giant Fathom E+ Ex 2026 is an aluminium hardtail eMTB at the value end of Giant's eMTB range. Headline numbers: 120mm fork, Yamaha PW-X3 motor at 85Nm and a 500W peak with a 2.75kg motor mass, an 800Wh removable Giant EnergyPak Smart battery, 66.0 degree head angle and reach 416 to 469mm across seven listed sizes from SM through XL. Priced at GBP 2,999, the Fathom E+ Ex is one of the most affordable Yamaha-powered full-power hardtails on sale in the UK in 2026. No curated community quotes are on file yet, so this verdict leans on the gold spec and press knowledge of the PW-X3 platform.
Drive system and range. The Yamaha PW-X3 is one of the strongest full-power motors outside the Bosch/Brose mainstream, with 85Nm of torque, a 500W peak and a relatively light 2.75kg mass. It is the basis of Giant's SyncDrive Pro 2, and even in its raw Yamaha form delivers natural, responsive power that has long been a favourite of riders cross-shopping a Bosch CX. The 800Wh Giant EnergyPak Smart battery is removable for charging off-bike, easier travel and flat winter storage. Real-world range from an 800Wh battery on a hardtail (which is more efficient than a full-suspension equivalent) sits at the upper end of class. Riders should comfortably exceed 1,500m of vertical and four-plus hours of mixed trail riding in Eco/Trail per charge.
Geometry and handling. 66.0 degrees up front is steeper than full-suspension trail eMTBs (which typically run 64 to 65 degrees) but bang on for an XC-leaning hardtail and confidently neutral on flowing UK trail-centre terrain. Reach steps cleanly: 416 (S/SM), 434 (M/MD), 451 (L/LG), 469 (XL). It is useful that Giant offers two width-coded sizes per reach band, which improves fit. Chainstays are a uniform 470mm, on the long side, biasing the bike toward stability and traction on steep climbs rather than playfulness on tight descents. Wheelbase tops out at 1262mm on XL.
Build and value. One trim at GBP 2,999. The big-picture value story is the PW-X3 at 85Nm and 800Wh removable battery under GBP 3,000: no rival from Specialized, Trek or Cube touches that price-spec combination on a full-power hardtail in 2026. Frame is aluminium with a hardtail geometry tuned for trail use, not pure XC. The build will lean toward Suntour or RockShox 35-class fork, Shimano CUES or Deore 1x drivetrain and Tektro/Shimano hydraulic discs: modest in isolation but appropriate for the spend.
Caveats and known gripes.
- Hardtail, not full-suspension. Aggressive descending and bigger hits ask more of the rider's arms and the rear tyre. Suits XC, trail-centre and commuting use far better than serious natural terrain.
- 120mm fork. Adequate for trail, light for true mountain use. Slacker, longer-travel rivals at sub-GBP 4,000 (e.g. Whyte 902 E, Cube Reaction Hybrid) trade weight for capability.
- 470mm chainstays. Long for an XL frame; cornering won't feel as snappy as a Specialized Levo Comp.
- Yamaha display ecosystem. Less feature-rich than Bosch's Flow or Specialized's Mission Control app: basic, but functional.
- Sparse community signal. The Fathom E+ Ex 2026 has minimal owner reporting on the eMTB Forums community as of mid-2026; long-term reliability data is yet to mature.
Verdict. The 2026 Fathom E+ Ex is the most affordable way into Yamaha PW-X3 power with an 800Wh removable battery in the UK market. It suits riders who want maximum motor and battery for the spend, who ride mostly XC, trail centres or moderate natural terrain, and who can live with hardtail compliance. Buyers chasing aggressive descending, full-suspension comfort or a more premium ecosystem should step up to the Reign E+ or look at full-suspension rivals from Trek or Whyte. Production status: current.
