EMTB Forums verdict

The 2023 Canyon Neuron:ON (alloy) is the brand's adventure-minded trail eMTB: a full-suspension 29er with 130 mm of travel front and rear (120 mm fork on the smaller XS and S frames) built around a robust aluminium frame and Canyon's Triple Phase Suspension linkage. Unlike the carbon Neuron:ON CF that arrived alongside it, this alloy version is Shimano-powered, not Bosch.

Power comes from Shimano STEPS: the EP8 (DU-EP800, 85 Nm) on the 7, 8 and 9, and the value-focused EP6 (DU-EP600, also 85 Nm) on the entry 6. A 630 Wh Shimano battery features on M to XL frames, dropping to 504 Wh on the shorter XS and S. Four UK trims spanned the range, from the Deore-equipped Neuron:ON 6 at £3,649 up to the Neuron:ON 9 at £5,249 with its RockShox Pike Select+ fork, SRAM Code R brakes and wireless GX Eagle AXS shifting.

Geometry is moderate rather than aggressive, in keeping with its do-it-all trail brief: a 66.5 to 67.5 degree head angle, roughly 74.5 to 75 degree effective seat angle, 435 to 440 mm chainstays and reach growing from 405 mm (XS) to 475 mm (XL). It is a stable, comfortable all-day mileage machine rather than a steep-and-rowdy enduro tool.

This model year is now discontinued. Canyon's later Neuron:ON range consolidated around the carbon, Bosch-powered Neuron:ON CF platform with longer 140 mm travel and updated geometry, leaving this Shimano-equipped alloy generation as the more affordable, touring-leaning chapter of the line.

What the numbers mean on the trail

Computed from this bike's geometry, spec and build kit — reach, wheelbase, chainstay, head and seat angles, travel, motor, weight and the fork/tyre/brake spec — and worked out per size, because a fixed chainstay can make an S and an XL feel very different.

Size
Descending
52

A solid all-round descender (67.5° head angle, 130mm) — capable in the rough and steep without being an all-out bruiser.

Playfulness
62

A fair bit of pop, but happiest on flowing trail rather than trials moves.

Size balance
88

Rear-long with a planted front in L (FC:RC 1.73) — easy to weight the front and quick to turn, though it can feel light at the back at real speed.

Technical climbing
73

Shimano EP8 (DU-EP800) and a steep 74.5° seat angle keep the weight planted over the front — a proper winch. 500W of peak power and 85Nm of torque — a strong full-power motor.

Best suited toAll-round trail riding across mixed terrain.

No single standout trait — a balanced, versatile bike.

Watch out forNo major red flags in the L geometry.

The numbers are well balanced for its category.
