What rear tyre?

Hello all,
after having assegai on the rear of my 29 er i want to change the tyre
is there a better maxxis tyre for the rear?
like the aggressor? Or DHF?
only changing it as a rock decided to slash open the sidewall,even though it was a DD EXO,it made mincemeat of it,so time for something different,i have an assegai on the front,so what maxxis can i put on the rear?
bike lives in wales,so,rock drops,loose shale etc.

Trust the great riders of Wales, Atherton's. So choose Continental tires. Argotal and Kryptotal DH or Enduro, super soft and soft.

Wife and I had punctures with Exo+, since moving to DD over a year ago not had any. Might just be lucky tbf

My riding conditions are similar, so here's what I short listed for my bike (disregard the width, that is simply the largest my bike can take):

1. WTB Vigilante (2.5) front/WTB Trail Boss (2.4) rear
2. Schwalbe Magic Mary front/Schwalbe Big Betty rear
3. Maxxis Minion DHR II

I ended up with DHR (back)/DHF (front) because that's what my LBS had. Both are “Wide Track”, have EXO Protection casing. Judging from comments above, seems like I good choice.

Wide Trail (WT) refers to Maxxis' 2.40” and 2.50”-wide MTB tires which are optimized for use with 30- 35mm internal width rims. WT tires will mount to rims outside this width range; however, the profile will not be ideal which may negatively impact performance.

We've have frequent punctures with EXO and EXO+ (broken flint embedded in chalk), so now have DD - no more punctures.

Indeed with respect to 'WT', I am waiting for my 30mm rims to be delivered. I did note that you originally mentioned, "Might just be lucky tbf". So fingers crossed that the EXO will function in the Canadian Rockies as I am committed to them now.

I'm a big fan of specialized tyres and use a hillbilly front and cannibal rear in gravity T9 spec.
But and it's a massive but, I have just stuck a part used assigai bog standard xo on the rear with a cushcore insert
God knows how long it will last, hopefully summer
Btw the sidewalls look like whipped cream with all the sealant oozing out

I’ve tried several different rear tyres but nothing beats a DHR2 DD in MaxxTerra. Perfect balance of grip, damping and rolling resistance.

Maxxis do four casings,
EXO
EXO+
DD and DH,DH is the best one,it has the most protection,but is a heavier tyre,and more expensive,but worth it i think.

Just fitted the same,there is a noticeable difference in the feel of the tyre as i fitted it from an exo + tyre.
just feels more capable,and you can feel the sidewalls are thicker

I run a basic DHR II in skinny EXO casing on the flint ridden south downs & I've never had a slashed sidewall. People can get very hung up on tyres & go all sorts of over the top with them. My experience is go for grip over chunky sidewalls every time. YMMV.

unlikely,its just that the sidewalls have more protection.

Apparently the EXO is not available with the Maxxgrip compound, but is with the Maxxterra and dual compound. Looks like the DD is usually MaxxGrip or MaxxTerra, and no dual compound. You'll probably find that for the EXO+, and the DD, they are generally available with Maxterra.

But the answer would be 'no' because the DD and DH are available with Maxxgrip but the EXO is not.

There is no evidence that Maxxis DoubleDown (DD) or Downhill (DH) casings have smaller sidewall lugs compared to EXO or EXO+ casings. The size and shape of the tread lugs-including the sidewall (cornering) lugs-are determined by the specific tire model (such as Minion DHF, DHR II, or Assegai), not by the casing type (EXO, EXO+, DD, or DH)

Best advise you have had I puncture those when there new the first week if pressure gets anywhere below 20.

Switched to something similar to DD and I can go out and run 15 on accident and not worry. Will never purchase exo or +
