I had a look on the forum and couldnt see this issue mentioned before. See picture below:

These two rubber rings are loose on my headset. They look like they are meant to fit into the gap that can be seen in the photo but their circumference is too big. I emailed Trek who quickly replied saying that they dont sell those parts seperately so they sent me a new head set, which is great, but the headset doesnt include those gaskets/rings either.

Anyone have any issue with these or even know their part number?

Thanks

Have you taken it apart to ensure the seals aren't merely unseated?
If not, the seals may be ok, just fit them correctly and apply silicone grease where the seals move against the other parts of the headset.

Hmmm 🤔. I’ve never seen rubber seals like that, on a headset, before? I don’t really know what the benefit would be. …unless it’s a different assembly configuration.

I would think it would allow the headset to wobble.

I've got exactly the same issue on my Rail+, you're correct its a gasket that sits between part number 1 and part number 2 in the parts diagram below. You're gasket has split into two rings (it should be one ring).

I ordered part number 1 online hoping it would come with the gasket but unfortunately it doesn't. After chatting to one of the technicians at my local Trek store he said the only way to get that part would be to order an entire new headset (apparently its not an unusual problem for this part to fail).

I'm not sure there's much point in splashing out sixty odd quid for a crappy gasket that will only last 6 months, so probably going to buy a headset from third party company that can supply individual spares (possibly Hope). However, there appears to be mind bending array of headset types - can anyone point me towards a headset that would fit a Trek Rail+8?

The Trek store declined a warranty claim stating that the seal failed due to wear and tear (it's only 6 months old), and also declined to help identify a suitable headset replacement.

Trek sent me a new headset straight away. It didn't have the gasket. I emailed them and said it didn't have it and their response was it's not important and carry on without it....

On mine I think the larger ring sits between the frame and the headset. I don't think they were originally one piece. The large piece looks like it may have come out due to the over tightening the headset and squeezing it out.

I have same issue, it’s like it’s stretched and now slack, not looked for a solution.
