Trail Animals

Passed these cows and decided to double back for a pic. When I lifted bike back on to road thought there was play in headset. Turned out that quick release was well loose , could have been nasty. No first aid kit today as I was on the touring bike.

Roast Venison anyone. Can't decide if it's rotting or been burnt. In middle of road it wasn't there a few days ago.

I grew up riding & XC skiing in Fairbanks, Alaska, so saw plenty of Moose on the trail. Lived on Kodiak Island for a while, Gotta love riding the MTB and never knowing if the next turn has a Kodiak waiting for you or not. Was climbing a steep road one day in the mist and came around a corner to a steaming pile of blueberries, that was enough in that area for the day. I live in Colorado now, and only have worry about Mountain Lions, Rattlesnakes (on the trail, on the rocks next to the trail, and stiking at you), and tourists on E-bikes. In the past few weeks have seen many deer, lots of turkey's, prairie dogs (they make squirrels look smart), but no rattlesnakes yet. Bunny hopping rattlesnakes is not advised, it is amazing how fast they can curl up.

Bear and Fox and Deer and Turkeys and Bobcat and Rattlesnakes. Lucky no Mnt Lion sightings in person yet. But hundreds have been watching me, I'm just not on the preferred menu.

shared with bears
last week, had a little fella cut across the trail right in front of me, almost hit him, weird looking one too, fur was ratty for a small bear and gray in color. Never seen one that color

Last ride had the biggest rattlesnake ive seen in decades slithering off the trail, we usually run over them on accident. Ill take pics often of them, this one? I kept on going. Just his rattles were a few inches long

Also had a fox right in front of me with a squirrel dinner in his mouth

On a trail I use often and shared with bears looking looking for blackberries.
Only a juvenile but I saw him in time for a video and a gentle warning.

I’m not an advocate of bear repellent for our area, but a few recent events and very close encounters has changed my mind.

There’s paperwork, ID, and a criminal search before you can purchase and carry this bear repellent. I only carry this for one particular trail (which can be a black bear highway imo). Thankfully there are no Grizzlies in this area …yet. Besides Polar Bears, Brown Bears are the largest.

Most of the bears in this area are accustomed humans …but the big guys don’t care and won’t move. We move far away and let them pass. Momma bears with cubs …very dangerous.

I’m curious if somthing like that would deter a elephant charge or just piss it off even more.

Might work on a lion charge. But they don’t usually charge unless you run.

Yeah, there’s only a few hikers and MTB’ers who carry bear repellent in our area. Having a trail-dog helps, especially if you’re hiking alone. In the event of a serious bear attack, wildlife wardens quietly take care of matters.

The worst thing that can happen is feeding these bears. They associate people with food. Garbage day on our street brings out the air-horns. You definitely look both ways up and down the street before you exit the house. I got surprised a few weeks ago by a roaming bear when I opened my garage door.

This is just a clip of the video my son and I took.

I don’t know? But I wouldn’t want to find out. A few days ago a hiker accidentally dropped their bear spray and it exploded. The users warned that the spray could be noticeable in the area.

My buddy and I were riding the Tahoe Rim Trail to Flume Trail and then finishing up on the Tyrolian Downhill. As I crossed a narrow wood bridge just below Marlette Lake, I heard a loud bang and felt the bridge jump. I then heard a loud splash. I hit the brakes on my bike thinking my buddy who was behind me, had crashed off of the bridge and fell into the creek which was about three feet below the bridge. As I slowed down, I heard my buddy scream "Bear, Big Fuc#$% Bear, Big Bear, Big Bear." I turned and saw a bear walking up the creek towards Marlette Lake. My buddy later told me that when I crossed the bridge, this startled the bear which was underneath the bridge. The bear hit the bridge when it stood up on it's hind legs. My buddy said he was about a foot from the bear when he crossed the bridge. When we later reached Marlette Lake, we saw the bear playing in the water with a stick. Evidentally the bear wasn't as traumatized as my buddy. I was able to take a few photos of the bear.

I rode Laguna several days ago and came across this rattlesnake eating a rabbit. You can see the drag marks where the rattlesnake was dragging the rabbit off of the trail. I tried to get a close up shot, but when I bent over to take the shot, the snake released the rabbit and coiled on me. Some things you just leave be.

Never mind the soddin' bears, look at that trail! There is no way that I could ride that!! I would have to get off and push. And maybe even turn round and go back!

As you may have guessed by now, I don't like heights, especially when there is a big life ending drop involved.

Imagine meeting a bear on the corner probably fall off with the fright. Suddenly the rain and mud isn't so bad

I might have posted this somewhere before?

I had stopped and sat for a rest …then this happened.

“Mossy” Trail. They wouldn’t let me join in, way above my level anyway.

Besides sport fishing, I only commercial fished once in the Seymour Narrows to help a friend for 6-7 days. (Salmon on Vancouver Island). Some crazy tides there.

Helped my brother-in-law land a 200lb Halibut in his 16’ boat. 1-1/2 hours. He shot it before we pulled it in the boat. The flakes of meat were too big imo.

I can’t imagine the risks of deep sea fishing …that’s a whole other level of risk.…but the money must be good. 👍🏻
