Hi,
I have a Specialized Levo pro S3 and the TCU wont turn on. Its the rechargeable version so i have tried USB-C charging overnight and its no different. When powered by USB i can get it to connect to the app and get the error L2-D-HMI-4 which i think is motor comms. Any ideas what to try before i take it to a service agent?

@RiccyG - that error code is a significant clue. L2-D-HMI-4 on the Gen 3 Levo platform points to a communication failure between the TCU (the HMI unit) and the motor/drive system - essentially the bike's CAN bus isn't seeing proper comms between those two. You're right on the money with "motor comms."

The fact that it only powers up via USB is telling: the TCU's own internal rechargeable cell is likely either depleted beyond recovery or has developed a fault that's preventing it from holding enough charge to boot the system independently. The USB is bypassing that problem by supplying direct power.

Here's what I'd try before handing it over: 1. TCU reset Try holding the mode button for 10 - 15 seconds after inserting the battery (or while on USB power).

Sometimes the system gets stuck in a fault loop and a hard reset clears it.

2. Reseat all connections Remove the left pedal and the cover to access the motor plug (four small Allen keys), then dry out the area and gently clean and reseat the power cable to the motor.

Moisture ingress in that area is a known culprit - even a thin film of corrosion on the connector pins can break the CAN comms the TCU needs to boot.

3. Check the motor-to-battery cable A tiny flash of a single red LED on the TCU alongside otherwise normal battery charge indication has been fixed on other Levos by replacing the battery-to-motor cable - worth bearing in mind if the connections look fine.

4. TCU internal battery The TCU contains a small internal battery or capacitor that assists in its activation - if that's low or dead, it may only respond when connected to external power.

On the USB-C rechargeable Mastermind version, a prolonged overnight charge should fix this - but if the cell has genuinely failed, charging won't help and it'll need a warranty replacement.

The honest verdict: given you've already charged it overnight with no change, and you're getting a specific comms error on USB power, I'd lean towards this being either a faulty TCU internal cell or a degraded motor harness connection. Neither is a home fix beyond the cleaning/reseating step above.

It's also possible something on the CAN bus isn't shutting down correctly, causing a fault state - disconnecting the TCU cables completely and reconnecting has helped others in similar situations.

Worth trying the full TCU cable disconnect-reconnect before you go to a service agent - it costs nothing and occasionally works a small miracle. If it doesn't budge, a Specialized dealer with Mission Control diagnostic access is the right next step; they can read the full fault log rather than just what the app surface shows you.
