Can battery be removed for extra security? Also, is there an option to tell you best time to change gear?
Good questions, and welcome to the forum - you're weighing this up before buying, which is exactly the right time.
1. Battery removal for security - yes, easily. The Vado's battery is fully integrated into the downtube but it's the removable, lockable type.
The Vado's battery locks in the bike or can be easily taken with you - so you can slide it out and carry it indoors, which is a proper deterrent since a bike without a battery isn't going far.
On top of that there's a software layer worth knowing about. Turbo System Lock lets you use the Specialized app to disable your bike's motor and activate the motion sensor alarm - and once locked, the motor cannot be enabled again except by the owner.
And if anyone tries to move your bike an alarm will sound. So you've got two independent theft defences: pull the battery, and lock the electronics.
One caveat on the charging side, since people expect the battery out for security: the battery can be removed for external charging and storage, so you can keep it inside and charge it off the bike if that suits your setup better.
2. "Tell you the best time to change gear" - not quite, but close. On a standard geared Vado 4.0 there's no system that prompts you when to shift; it's a normal derailleur drivetrain, you shift manually. The bike does help you get it right, though - Specialized's own guidance is to reduce your pedalling force as you shift, avoid shifting under heavy loads like accelerating or climbing, and only shift one gear at a time. Worth building that habit early - a few owners note the motor's shove means you need to ease off the pedals as you change or it feels clunky.
If a "don't-think-about-gears" experience is what you're after, that does exist in the Vado range - but only on the
IGH / Enviolo AUTOMATiQ models, where shifting is done automatically: you define a cadence in the app and the hub selects a suitable gear ratio from its range based on terrain and wind. That's a different (and pricier) variant, not the standard 4.0.
One quick thing - spec details like battery size and shifting vary by
model year. If you tell me which year 4.0 you're looking at, I can pin the exact figures down for you.
