Replacing an E8000 with an EP8 Motor

I ride a Merida with an E8000 motor that has done around 5000kms. I can't complain about the power level or overall performance. It suits me well but the motor is getting noisy and I suspect it's bearings.

I see the E8000 can be replaced with the EP8. Not trivial, but possible.

How many here have done this?

I'd only do it if the E8000 crapped itself somehow and I ended up with a grounded bike.

You can buy another E8000, they are still readily available new.
l don't think the EP8 is any more reliable although it's got a bit more power and is more refined being a more modern unit.

LBS which is part of a chain told me when I bought my Norco that they had heaps of issues with E8000s but none with EP8s. They also sell Merida. ...and yeah it could be just salesmanship.

Can you buy the EP8 motor? It seems you can get hold of the E8000 but not the EP8 or E7000 from my understanding.

Something else to think of is that the motor covers probably won't fit the EP8

There's a seller on Ebay been offering the E8000 for about six months, price U.K.£600 but excluding import duties/VAT
So probably around £800

and lots of ppl saying you get no warranty on these ebay motors, so your better off going back to Shimano and at least getting a warranty.

l will check that out, the seller has sold hundreds of them so l will ask him about the warranty.
How much is the motor from Shimano?

Okay

So it would have to be sent back to Germany, as long as the seller still exists.

Although they seem to be a fairly large online bike store, so hopefully they won't disappear.
