Hello,

this summer I had a serious accident with my emtb and one of the (minor) consequences is that I ripped my beloved Goretex C5 Trail jacket. On longer trips it was always in my backpack, especially during wet or slightly colder summer days.

When I tried to buy a new one I realized that Gore does not produce it anymore (and it's impossible to buy it anywhere).

What I liked about it is that it was very light, breathable enough, with a good water and wind protection and a nice hoodie.

Now the question is: can you recommend me a -hard shell- jacket that will have the above points I liked of the Gore? Any experience?

If you want a jacket that is actually waterproof and repells water without a DWR coating (like all the alternatives) but still breathable, the only fabric I know of is "outdry" which has the waterproof membrane on the outside and not trapped between layers. This means that it does not "wet-out" (like the alternatives). Made by Columbia it has a hood..... Men's Reign No Shine™ Waterproof Jacket | Columbia Sportswear

Serious rain coats them. Iv never spent big money on a rain jacket how do they wash ? Maybe im doing it wrong but if always found they only work really well new ? Once washed they start to leak

tech wash, followed by 2 rinses, followed by some heat to re-activate the DWR normally get's them back to beading properly. If that doesn't work spray with Graingers and then do the heat.
no idea about the Columbia one I think it's similar to Gore shake dry - no re-proofing required.
I do wonder how well they'd hold up to MTB abuse or backpack use...

the missus has I think 4 fox Ranger 2.5 Jackets - she commutes in all weathers and swears by them
but they run too hot for me

Most of the year I try not to wash my outer cycling gear or bike @calnearlyebike but like now I come back plastered in mud I bung in the machine 20 min cycle 30C with "halo" sports wash. However that jacket I hang the hood on the handlebars and hose off along with the bike if required. Correct about those jackets with a DWR coating (all the breathable alternatives) brilliant when new (before washing)!

I don't think Halo is suitable tbh - cos it leaves anti bacterial stuff behind

Wash properly and they won't leak.

I only really wash my waterproof stuff once a year though. If it's wet and muddy hang it up to dry and air then brush the dried mud off does it.
