Post-warranty repair/replacement: Bosch & Shimano?

I'm asking the same question on the Bosch forum.

I'm wondering what people's experiences are with Bosch and Shimano post-warranty. IMO that's a bigger deal than in-warranty given I intend to ride these bikes indefinitely.

I have no horse in this race as I have both a Bosch (gen4 pre-smart system) and Shimano (EP801-RS). Bosch is out of warranty. Shimano is a year into two-year warranty. Bosch motor replaced twice. No issues with Shimano.

For motor repair/maintenance: DIY, third-party, or manufacturer?
For motor replacement, are the third-party options for purchasing new? How reliable are rebuilds?

What are the intervals people are following for what kind of service (bearing, seals, etc)?

The guys over at E-Motor Repairs know their stuff and service both brands you have mentioned but I believe they do them all anyway.

In terms of service I get mine done every year to make sure it’s got the best chance of getting through the year until the next service. Just like my forks and rear shock.

ep801 there is no repair, only replace, and supplies are drying up now.

You can get bearings replaced, but if their bad so are the gears, and there are no parts.

These motors last around 3000 miles and their junk after that.

Need to look into swapping a different brand of motor myself. 6000 miles and my ep801 went in shop for getting its 3rd motor installed under warranty

That’s incorrect as I mentioned above the guys at E-Motor Repairs service shimano motors along with having refurbished parts or remanufactured parts to fix them.

im in usa, called a shop here he said he wont touch an ep801. You do know they have a switch inside that bricks it, if you split cases? im sure the repair shop knows this. Id buy gears from him and fix my own if it was cost effective

They can do bearings in the shop you mentioned, but for the cost of fixing stripped gears you can get a brand new motor

remember they say this------We only use high quality replacement parts recommended by E-bike manufacturers----- and there are none.

Nowhere on this planet can you get ep801 internal parts.

No they have refurbished gear and they are a lot cheaper than a new motor to repair.

There is also no switch as they have serviced mine without any issues. Just because one repair shop can’t touch them doesn’t mean others have crack the repair and does offer a full service.

If tits that bad they can also supply uk customers with a brand new EP8 within a week as there is plenty of stock in the uk.

So please stock saying it’s not possible when it is as you aren’t an expert.

I did not say it is not possible, please comprehend. I simply said it is not cost effective.

And in the USA that is the case. If mine does not get covered under warranty, I will contact them and honestly hope you are correct.

Where is this said video ?

As the guys at E-Motor Repairs have had no issues with opening them.
 
My line on this: It’s the reason buying from online shops is something I avoid. I reckon you stand a better chance in this swamp if you have a good dealer in your corner

It’s not harder the guys at E-Motor repairs had one on the bench this week for a service.
If you don’t know what you’re talking about then stop talking rubbish.

Nothing I said was incorrect. It is a fact the 801 is harder to work on than an 800. And I have not found someone who will work on an 801 as of yet.

The service centers here I have contacted refuse to work on them, so you do not know what you are talking about.

Not everyone has homemade gears to repair these.

The above repairman is in Poland not USA. here they just tell you to buy a new motor

Trust me I know what I’m talking about and was in the shop this week when they had an EP801 on the bench for a service. They also said no the EP801 and the EP800 are both the same to service so again you haven’t opened one so please stop spreading poor rumours. These guys know what they are doing and I spend a decent amount of time in their shop.

They also have made their own gears for shimano motors and can fix more that a lot of people believe can be fixed so again stop saying they aren’t repairable when they are.
The guys over the water have been scared into believing they can’t be fix that’s all and the guys at E-MotorRepairs have spend years repairing them and have now got everything figured out.

I never stated they could not be worked on.

I said they cannot be worked on here so far. and none exist for sale in USA from searching. Only replacements are from other countries, and they are very limited.

The local Authorized Shimano service center here, will not split cases and do any maintenance.

The owner also stated every brand around here only gets on average about 3000 miles out of the motors he sees. 4,828 KM

The 801 motor has a safety device and will brick the motor if anyone decides to pop the case and do the work themselves.

Shimano does not even offer replacement motors for the 8000. So fixing is your only hope or upgrading to the 801

Again you haven’t worked on these motor so please stop saying this. I have just said the guy at E-MotorRepairs have successfully serviced many including one this week so there is no safety device that bricks the motor.

Dude please comprehend. That Is a fact. The video I posted says the same thing.

If people listen to you, they will brick their motor.

I never said a rare shop cannot fix these since they know the work around.

I said if the average person opens their motor, they will brick it. So pay attention or beat it with your lies

But they won’t as there is no such thing.

Again you haven’t worked on them and I have stood next to the guy at the shop while he worked on it so I have seen it for my own eye and know you are talking rubbish.

These ep801 do not brick themselves fact!!

Hmm, well you are a highly resourceful person. But what do people less resourceful than you do as decent local e-bike dealers go to the wall?
