About a 1-1.5 years ago I received an over the air update and ever since then my motor shuts off after a period of riding. The solution is to remove the battery and reinsert (ie full power reset the electronics). Over this time the pattern I have observed is that after about 3 hours of riding this event occurs. To me it feels like there is a timer / counter in memory and it doesn’t get cleared unless power is removed.

Am I the only one experiencing this issue ? If this is a firmware bug I’d have thought it would be wide spread.

As far as I know I am on the latest firmware versions for the controller and the Bluetooth gateway.

One thing I didn't realize is that the updates through OTA/app are not the only updates you can acquire. The dealer has other updates available. Maybe try that?

I didn’t know that so thank you for letting me know. I’ll take it to the shop I purchased from and see what they have to say.

I was surprised myself. I have a 2021 Stance and make sure I'm always up to date via the app. When I took it in for a yearly check up this past spring they said they'd update it. I said I always do that, which is when they informed me their in-house tool checks for more.
When I picked it up they said an update had been applied. I haven't noticed any difference, and I had no issues but just filed it away as a "Good to know"...

Hi. Is the 2nd light flashing red when this happens? My 2023 Reign was shutting off periodically during rides. I needed to have the torque sensor replaced by the local bike shop.

I am not sure to tell you the truth. I am biking and then the motor turns off. By the time I look down at the bike it’s all dark. Sometimes hitting the on button works but for a very short time .. like a few minutes at most. Eventually it shuts off to the point that hitting the on button doesn’t do anything. Like the timer maybe had a few ticks left but eventually gets to zero. Only thing to remedy is remove and reinsert battery which makes it go without issue for another round (~3 hours).

I have the bike at the shop. We shall see what they say. Since this doesn’t seem widespread maybe it’s the sensor or some other electronic that stops working until a power reset happens.

Check to make sure your speed sensor magnet is not loose and easily spun with your fingers, if you are using a center lock rotor. Make sure the center lock nut is secure. I had a similar issue and did not catch it until the center lock nut came loose enough for me to notice there was a problem with my rear brakes. Since tightening the nut down to torque specs, never had a motor shut off problem since.

Good luck! Hope they're able to provide a quick fix.

Thank you for the hint. Will check once I get the bike back from the shop (if still having the issue).

I had the same problem, took it to 2 different Giant dealers they couldn’t resolve the issue. Eventually I noticed the crank was loose that issue was a motor bearing, I thought maybe it was related (motor working to hard or something)
Found another giant dealer and got the motor replaced, that fixed the motor cutting out completely but I started getting very short stalling on steep climbs.
Back to the shop 3 times each time they would find incline and speed sensor error, they eventually they got a giant tech out from head office were they tried plugging straight into the diagnostics computer instead of Bluetooth, that didn’t fix it either so the bike went off to Giant head office in Australia. 3 months later I ended up replacement bike with all the upgrades I had made plus some
I feel this problem should be well known to Giant by now as you are not the only one
My advice is find the best Giant dealer not just the one you got the bike from as they are not all the same when it comes to fixing ebikes

Update and resolution - the dealer said my motor tilt sensor was producing very wrong numbers. They calibrated the sensor. I have had 2 rides so far, 2.5 hour the first and 2 hours the second. No shutoff experienced.

I suppose the tilt sensor is a safety feature? If the bike was thinking it had flipped due to the wacky numbers makes sense that it would shutoff. Hoping the solution sticks.

I ended up replacing my motor, new kept stalling on step climbs just for a split second, went back to shop several times kept coming up as incline censor, eventually went to Giant headquarters for fixing
Hopefully you have no more troubles
