Hey,

I’m a returning mtb’er. Haven’t ridden for about 10 years and am thinking about jumping in to emtb.

I’m quite happy finding the right bike, but I’m not sure the best place to start in terms of riding. I’ve got a few trail centres near me - my current plan is to hire a bike a few times and possibly get a 1:1 session with a coach to show me the basics of riding an emtb before hitting the trails on my own. Does that sound sensible?

Also, I live in an area where there’s loads of trails on my literal doorstep (North Wales). But is there a site or app that shows and rates/grades so I know I’m riding somewhere suitable? Thanks

Welcome
If your an mtb rider of old it will soon come back to you
As for riding an EMtb there just a little heavier which can in a lot of cases be an advantage you will soon get used to it
I say get out there (y)

If you're a trail centre rider and you want to get a feel for the bike before tackling anything harder..go for blue graded trails ..which in the main should flow without to many ( if any ) technical features ..
As your confidence grows then progress onto red trails ..black graded trails await you after that ...
A lot of bikes ride "light" and as mentioned above the extra weight can in fact keep you planted on the downs ..
Have fun 👍🏻

As you're in North Wales I know both Llandegla and Coed y Brennin rent bikes but my experience with the rentals is that they are utter poo, the tyres are hard as in the compounds and have tubes so pressurised so much to stop the pinch flats, the suspension is of the bottom of the spectrum in terms of quality so don't perform well.

See if you get a decent spec'd one or borrow a mates as the hire ones might put you off.

Thanks all, I used to frequent degla back in the day, and is only 20 mins away so that’s where I was planning to go first.

Quality of the rentals isn’t too concerning as it’s just to get me back on the saddle before writing a large cheque for a bike.
