Hi all,

I'll likely need to replace my motor. It's out of warranty (2021 Kenevo in Switzerland imported from Germany with a motor replacement done by a LBS in 2022). I'll try my luck with the LBS to check for a warranty claim or at least some cost reduction. However, since this is Switzerland, I'm considering to change the motor on my own. So my question:

- will the motor replacement be plug & play or do I need any special tools and especially software to reset the firmware or so? As said, it's a 2021 Kenevo so it still does have the original TCU, not the mastermind unit.

Cheers and thanks for your answers

Specialized have a discounted replacement plan for out of warranty replacements depending on how far out of warranty you are i.e. the longer you are out the smaller the discount.

Is the motor fairly easy to take out? Have you come across any useful YouTube videos on how to take out the motor? I ask, because my motor is making a whistling or whirrring sound, and so I'm worried that I'll have to replace the motor soon. But I'll have to take the motor out myself, because I'm in Japan, and they don't sell or service the Levo here. I'll have to take it to Taiwan.

I've changed two myself not hard really. Take some pics as you go to remember which plugs go where in motor, and anything else you dismantle. Only 6 main bolts on my 19 levo. I'm no wizard mechanicly either. Worth changing cables out if the need done while it's out. Good luck. 2019 Levo expert I have . Be careful taking out speed sensor cable from motor it's very delicate.

Thanks, so you didn't need any firmware flashing or something of sorts?

No I just fitted motor it was posted to me. But I needed a new TCU in January so that has to be paired with the motor and frame so my choice was do local or send motor to Berkshire Cycles who supplied TCU and that's what I did . All good now .

so getting back on this, I had it replaced by the shop within a few days. Specialized offered 20% discount on the motor which more or less offset the working hours of the shop. So in the end same price but less effort than if I'd done it myself. That's been a 3y old motor with ~3000km on odometer (mostly on turbo)

How much did it end up costing if it's not indiscrete? The new motor is coming with a 2 year warranty I believe? cheers

Exactly, new 2y warranty. Motor price 100% is 960 CHF. I paid 1250 with a lot of additional stuff done to the bike. I reckon only replacing the motor with 20% discount would be around 950

Nice. Sounds like you're getting good support.

There is 1 motor repair place in Europe and 1 in the US, those are your best resources for a Gen 1/2 motor. The rebuilds are better than brand new, just be prepared to wait a few good weeks during the downtime. The motor itself comes out very easily, its a skill set of 2/5 on the process.

Hello Chris_R, where did you get your motor replaced? I'm in Switzerland too and my motor is dead. Thank you.
