Recently my 2019 Trance E has developed some annoying behaviour. The motor engages are abrupt when I start pedalling after coasting, feels very "on and off" the motor is also louder than normal. If I rotate the pedals slowly in my bike stand the engagement is very erratic and has a sharp kick. I also feel pedal resistance while the motor is off.

Has anyone had similar issues or have any ideas about what's going on?

Probably the freewheel mechanism is damaged... or aged. But I am no expert. These motors (all ebike motors) are not made to last more than 2-3 years if you ride 2000-3000km each year like me. I have broken 3 motors already on 3 ebikes... no hard riding, just riding a lot and good maintenance.

We need some changes in how they respond to warranty claims with electric motors in general (bikes, motorcycles, cars, ...)

Is there anyone in europe that service these yamaha motors ?

Replace bearings and so on...
