My bike sounds like a bag of bolts over rough ground. I’m trying to find the source of the noise.

is this normal for a steps 8000 motor?

I can hold the crank still and it continues to have that amount of play and rattles.

Something like this came up within the last week (or I noticed it then).
It is a loose spider. You need a special tool to tighten it, but the bike shop should fix this free of charge.

I'm guessing, but the special tool may be the same "C" spanner that Shimano use on bottom brackets.

Park tool LRT-2 tool for the spider look ring. Shimano also make a specific tool but I believe more expensive than the park tool

You can bodge it with plumbers grips, but personally I wouldnt

If your motor has been replace by you LBS I would suggest getting them to sort it - IIRC there is a circlip between the motor and the chainring which is easy to loose when taking off the spider, and this may not have been put in, or the lock ring torqued up enough.

More info in service manual, page 76:

Cheers. The motor was taken from a new donor bike, so I guess it’s just the spider that needs a tighten. I’ll be asking my LBS to do it for me as the tool is out of stock everywhere.

Make sure they have the right tool - I remember when I had my motor warrantied, they shop didn't have the tool, and had to order one in.

I’ve ordered the Shimano TL-FC39 tool from eBay and I have a 16 notch BB tool
Which I think will fit the FC39 tool.

It’s not the spider, it’s on tight, at 45nm and very solid. Lots of noise being made on engagement.

There is no sideways play. The rattle is from forward and backwards motion.

normal?

My E7000 has just over 800 miles on it & makes the same noise, but doesn't seem as bad, but that could be your microphone & my speakers making it sound worse.
My E8000 with 6 miles doesn't make any sound.

a slight engagement and disengagement noise from the crank's freewheel mechanism is normal.
yours sounds exessive. and the play when engaging looks way more than it should be.
but your shakeycam video and mic aren't helping anyone dignose the issue.
take the bike out the stand so it doesn't wobble and put the camera on a tripod or at least on a fixed surface.

is there any reason you haven't taken it to a bike shop instead of asking here?

Way better dude.

The noise is perfectly normal.
The rotational play is not. whether Shimano deem that amount of rotational play acceptible is yet to be determined.

Take it to a shop. The shop will need to forward your video (or their own) to madison for warranty.
It's either that or your whole motor will need to be sent off

it’s a 4 hour round trip to the bike shop
I don't believe you.
There will be a shimano service centre (any bike shop with a Madison account) way closer than 2hours drive away.
Get to know your actual LBS. If they are good. use them regularly and build up a decent relationship with their staff.
it's invaluable.

The motor is about 150 miles old.
I’ll try and track down a service centre in Essex.

Cheers.
Looks like a Soecialized Concept Store is my nearest one. Odd. But good in a way as I know some of the guys there.
