Just fitted a new chain and unless I'm missing something, the chainring is symmetrical, ie it doesn't matter for the placement of the chain as on a narrow/wide chainring?

The *only* reason for narrow/wide chainrings is to keep the chain on in a 1X setup. That's it. And the Shimano system has a chainguard/chainguide that does that for you. No need or benefit to a narrow/wide chainring in this application.
