Hey everyone!

Old guy here looking to get into e-bike stuff once the fires here in California settle down. I have done some a fair amount of trail riding with mountain biking sprinkled in throughout my life. My grand kids are starting to get into riding and other outdoor stuff, and I just cant keep up anymore on my old bike.

My kids set me up on reddit, but I did not like using the app on my tablet, so they found this place for me. Looking to learn what I can so I can get a model that is right for me, and not let my grand kids show me up anymore!

Your reply got me thinking though, is there insurance for these things?

Here in the U.K., cheaper bikes can be covered as named items on many household insurance policies, but higher value E-MTBs can not be covered.

You therefore need some kind of specialist cycle insurance, which costs about as much as insurance for a small car!

I think it is necessary to buy insurance as E-MTBs are a target for theives due to their high value and high demand, both when stored at home in garages or sheds, and whist being transported in / on the back of your car.

They can also cover you for accidental damage and third party damage / injuries / legal fees if you hit somebody!

There are many threads about this on this forum or you can just search online for cycle insurance.

Incidentally, going back to the "on fire" bit, I understand that due to the construction and built-in protection of e-bike batteries, they are very unlikely to catch fire in the event of a crash, and your phone battery is far more likely to cause problems.

Welcome Dan! I'm here in San Diego as well. The EMTB community is thriving despite the 'rona' and I know some shops will let you demo some bikes still if your looking to test the waters. Check out North of The Boarder or Black Mountain Bicycles
